Hehe, I know its stupid, but I must strive to appeal to SOME girls in my school (especially one) and a lot of people have been telling me to get buff and go to the weight room, which I dont want to do because I'm going to look like an idiot (I've never been in there, dont know what I would do in there)

So, I have at home, a 7 pound dumbell and a pullup bar, and a floor.

What can I do that wont stunt my growth? :cowboy:

Get a 25lb dumbell and do benches with them, also curls. With the 7lb, raise your arm into a lower case t position and hold it there for a bit then gradually lower it. Floor, abs abs abs, if you want, I actually got some 80s 8 minute abs workout video that works great to download. I wish I had a pullup bar, use it well.

Anyone that makes fun of noobs in the weightroom are idiots...I try to help any new people that I can (at my highschool weightroom) so that they dont get hurt and pull muscles like I have...

My advice: Lots of pushups and pullups. maybe get some more dumbells and do some sort of squats with them...oh, and dont forget those situps! important: when doing situps, dont let your stumache "expand" or "push out"...if you do, the muscles in your stomach will grow outward, not flat like you want them to :thumb:

Dips are also awesome for upper arm/shoulder workouts:

get two chairs - put one against a wall (so it won't slide) and put your hands on the edge of that one (like near your butt if you were sitting on the edge of the chair). Put the other chair facing you a few feet away. Put your feet on that chair. Lower your body up and down between the chairs and try to make a 90 degree angle with your arms. Do three sets. I did this every day for about 2 months one summer and had awesome looking shoulders.

Kinda like this:

Do they have to be the same height?

Omg azzy, I share your problem, I'm 14, and I'm the skinniest guy I know. Seriously. My wrists are 1 and 1/2 inches wide!! I run fast, and eat a ****load but I never get any fatter. :h:

I recommend going to the gym, and playing sports. Going to the gym is a different atmosphere, it's a place where u can meet new people, you'll also gain more experience. Sports can put you in shape to!

btw - azzy, you have a very fast metabolisim, i have one to but i'm not that skinny ;) You just gotta eat anything that has protiens (fish, beef, chicken..etc.) all the time, eat as much as you can. Always remember to eat as much as you can right after work out.

agreed. my cousin was real skinny and so he started to go to the gym. he went on a regular basis with a trainer for about 6 months and now he's huge.

also, should you ever consider supplements (protein, creatine, etc) try to make sure it doesn't contain aspartame, or phenylalanine. they decompose into a cancerous substance.

finally, cycle your workouts. don't just work on your arms or chest. one day do nothing but arms, another day chest/back, another legs, etc.

girls is as good a reason as any other, plus you're 14 it's something you should be thinking about...girls I mean

I try and workout in the gym often but if you can do it in the house then great. No real tips for you except make sure you stretch properly before cause I've pulled muscles I shouldn't have if I'd stretched right and I can tell you, it hurts.

Perhaps once you've been doing it in the house for a while you'd feel your confidence grow enough to try the gym...good luck :thumb:

by the way, you say girls (one in particular)...is she worth it :h:

lol I was a twig in my teens and like all twigs the most important thing to do to gain muscles is to eat and then eat some more. Keep your workouts short and hard and give your muscles time to recover. As a former toothpick I found that 2 or 3 45 minute workouts a week gave me the best results. The hardest part will really be the eating.

Don't worry about looking like an idiot at the gym because the reality is that no one really cares about how much you can lift and most often the more experienced guys will be happy to help you out if you ask them.

pushups! and more pushups :)

What you need to do.. is say to your self everyday an half an hour. Not.. like once a week allot of time and allot.
you just need to be constant and everyday alittle is better then 1 hour allot and then like a week nothing.

Why not just go to your school's gym. Who cares what others say, go with a friend or two that are new too to take away some of the neverousness. If your school has anything like ours you should be fine. Our highschool has anything and everything a fitness place would have. Just talk to your fitness trainer there if you have one. They should be able to point you in the right direction. If you are starting off, probably the best bet would be to workout for about an hour 3 days a week. Mon, wed, fri is best. If you are still concerned about your weight, take some weight protein. That should help you bulk up. As some of the other guys said, don't just focus on one thing. Work on your arms, legs, abs, chest, etc. Consider playing football, this will really help you get bigger and in excellent shape. Most football teams have offseason workouts.

Agreed. Like somone else said, DO NOT take creatine. If you start and then stop again, it can be harmful to you...Over the summer i lifted weights everyday for 3 months, and drank protein after everythime I lifted. When i started i was benching around 180-225...i dont remember where i started...But when i finished, i was benching almost 300lbs, and there are no bad side effects to protein (whey protein is the best). :thumb: (I am 6-1, 220lbs)

T-O I just meant that what works for regular body type people doesn't work for skinny guys. Pushups are great but they won't help put meat on your bones if you're built like a coat rack simply because skinny guys just aren't heavy enough.

Heres some great ones for abs. We do them in baseball, and after a month the inprovement is nice. Look them up.

Crunches
Boxer Kicks
Hello Dollys
Sissor Kicks
6 Inches

Maybe Start out at 30 seconds each, I promise you will be burning. Dont do them all in one time, mix them up, although crunches are easy to do every day. And Its really important to remember to stretch your back out, look for some information on that. Ab work puts a strain on your back, and if you dont relax it and stretch it out after your done, you could get serious back problems in the future.

Running is also good for the abs. Long Distance running, like a few miles a day. Just run without stopping, then build on your distance every day. Its 90% mental.

Another thing to remember with ab work is to breathe. The less you breathe, the more it hurts, and the more it puts unnessissary strain on your muscles.

Graphicslash, do you want to bulk up or just tone your muscles? You need to think about the pratical application of bulk, there isn't much. Infact, its better for most people to tone up, not bulk up. Unless you're planning on being an O or D lineman in football, I'd suggest toning your muscles instead of bulking them. Reasons:

When you grow older and *probably* stop working out all the time, the bulk will turn into useless mass, you'll just be a blob.

You won't necessarily gain a ton of strength by bulking, just mass.

By toning your muscles, you not only gain a ton of strength but you don't become massive, just chizzled.

That being said, its nice to be big, but you don't want to be a block with 2 legs. I'd suggest lifting lighter weights and doing more reps. If you can't do 6 reps with a weight, don't even bother with it, ie. if you can't do 6 reps with X amount of weight doing forearm curls, it won't be helping your body. Try low and work your way up, especially if you're skinny. Do maybe a 10 pound weight, 15 reps for 5 sets, alternating arms between sets (left arm 5 sets, right arm 5 sets). It won't do your body much good to do a 25 or 30 pound weight for 4 reps.

Remember, its about strength, not size. When you're chizzled to the max, you'll have enough size to do almost anything you want to do, without the bulk getting in the way.

By the way: maybe its time for a sticky where all the really good exercise discussion threads can be linked to. It seems every month or so, one of these exercise threads comes along and they're almost always chalk full of great info for people.

FROM A GYM GOER: never stop working out until you feel the BURN :)

For arms remember to do both biceps and triceps.
For man breasts (the attractive ones not the saggers) you really need to have several weights - bar, dunbells, multigym, peck deck etc but flies are pretty godd for that but with a 7lb dunbell you won't get far.

If you are wanting to become 'BIG' then you really need to be lifting weights that you can only do a few reps on.....if you want to become 'TONED' then any weight is ok but a lot of reps is needed :)

do press ups untils your brain becomes sore and you start quivering like a little girl :)

Lifting your body weight is a very good way to become toned so any pull ups, press ups, tricep dips, and hand stands puching up (try it against a wall just incase you fall).

Oh yeah everyone looks stupid first time they goto a gym :) if it bothers you go join a gym where they don't know you.

FINAL NOTE - getting 'buff' takes years so don't hope on impressing this girl instantly but best of look maybe she will notice the small changes :)

ADD ON - to bulk up you need to eat tonnes of food, it makes you look a little heavy like it has done me but I enjoy it :) It really depends on you I really enjoy the gym and see it as a challenge if you just want to impress then you won't last long unless people notice really soon :)

Colin - if he wants to get big then a weight that he can only do 3 reps on is good - but it stings the next day which is another good sign.

Write down what you want, and then take the advice given here and come up with a personal plan that you think will work for you, as in, exercises, number of reps per exercise, number of sets for reps, food to eat, food not to eat, etc.

If you want to get ripped, you're going to need to sacrifice some junk food, obviously. I'm still trying to clean up my diet before I get to exercising. Theres a lot that goes into working out, I'm going to do it in stages. Right now, I'm trying to eat better, healthier foods, soon enough, I'll start trying to get to sleep earlier, and wake up earlier, then I'm going to start circuit trainining in the mornings (30 minutes of running, come home and work out for half hour, and then have a massive breakfast).

If you are interested in getting girls to go after you, there are things far more important than bulking yourself up. In fact, if you ask most girls, they don't really care how buffed a guy is, and most find overly beefy guys unattractive. I recommend just staying aerobically fit. I've been playing basketball for years, and it is far more beneficial to my health than lifting weights. Plus you will likely grow taller (a good example is that I am 6'1 while my older brother who got very beefed up in high school is only 5'10).

More importantly, girls will take notice to how a guy carries himself. If you lack in the good looks department, you need only dress well, have good hygiene, style, and grooming in order to turn some heads. But these are only surface level attraction points. If this person is really a good friend than she sees something deeper than that in you. You must be confident, charming, and kind in order to win a girl's heart. You are still young and if you find high school miserable college will be a welcome change. Nobody was interested in me in high school because I wasn't a popular kid and I was shy. In college, I have received more attention than I can handle from the fairer sex. Just don't be afraid to be yourself, if girls are attracted to you, it might as well be for the right reasons.

CanadianGuy
December 5th, 2004, 05:42 PM
Listen to Mrg. Graphicslash if you're as skinny as you say you are you'd want to lift heavy weights regardless of how much bulkiness you'd like to gain and you'll want to double up on your meals otherwise you'll just be a ripped 95lber.

Colin judging by your advice I'm guessing that you're not a skinny guy. If you are a twig then I'd tell you to screw the extra cardio and spend that 30 minutes eating instead. Getting some meat on your bones and then work on tightening everything up. As for junk food I'd stay away from it simply because it takes up a lot of space in your gut that you could use for some good protein.

I'm very skinny CG, 6'0" 130 pounds, 16 years old. One of those guys with a very fast metabolism who will likely explode once I hit a ripe old age of 22 or so, because I eat so much food yet never see the consequences, which is partially why I'm going to start working out soon, because I know better than to think I won't become a fat*** once I'm older. Also, I feel and look very tired most of the time, yet I never get enough sleep. This is something I need to do for life, not to look better. Although, who can argue with being and looking physically fit. I want cardio though, I used to be able to run a 4:30 minute mile, but recently I haven't run and its playing havoc with my hockey game. I'm way too lazy at the moment to throw everything in high gear, although I will soon. Might be making one of my own topics like this shortly.

I disagree that he needs to lift heavy weights to start with, he's still very young, he'll put on the weight in due course, I think what he needs to do is work on getting the strength, and then if he wants, the bulk. I don't see the need to become huge right off the bat. Give their advice greater weighting though, I haven't personally worked out seriously, although I've gone through 3 semesterized phys. ed courses and read 2 books.

Let me add something to, find a job that involves good labor, if theres a spontaneous storm that knocks down a neighbors tree cut it for them and haul it off yourself. Eat a lot of steaks and potatoes. I went from a 130lb guy in middle school (5'6" ,7th grade) to a 283 lb guy in high school (6'2" ,10th grade). Make it routinely also. If you want to, I suggest getting up before school at like 6 am and work out for about 30-45 mins and then during school in weight class, and then after school.

G
December 6th, 2004, 03:41 PM
just push yourself all the time as its that few seconds of pure physical torment that wil make the difference! if you are doing bicep curls with 20kg's or 2kg's do them until you can really feel your biceps stinging then push a little more :)

if you want a workout I would suggest :

Monday - Biceps (10 mins cardio before)

Wednesday - Triceps (" " " ")

Friday - Chest (" " " ")

Each session lasts 1hr and should have 110% don't be scared to try new stuff, to not make yourself look like a fool don't go in thinking you can lift a certain weight work from the bottom and go up.

I strongly suggest you join a gym though if you feel this strongly about it as I think you have too few weights to make your training enjoyable....it would just become a boring routine.

I don't know about anyone else, but I wouldn't go outta my way to impress a girl (or girls) that are attracted to meatheads in the first place.

It all comes down to your rap mate. Every girl will succumb to confidence and some good game spittin. But confidence is the key, and if you need to "get buff" in order to build your confidence, go right ahead. But just remember, chix that dig boring meatheads don't have that much going on with themselves in the first place. They're usually airhead bimbos........wait....disregard everything I said before this.

lol

Graphics I somehow assumed that getting this girl was only part of the reason you wanted to get some meat on your bones. Attitude is everything when it comes to women. When I was in college I had a guy roommate that was a good looking (so girlfriends told me) and buffed but he had really low self esteem. He'd have women hitting on him in the club all the time but as soon as he opened his mouth I'd sidle in and grab them because he'd drone on and on about how he's no good with women yadayadayada... and as most people know that's a real turn off. If you want to get this girl walk with your head high as if you own the room but never critize, condemn or complain about anyone.
