I propose that ilyaslamasse gets his own category as Flash guru, or Flash Doctor, cause I always see tons of his posts on the Flash MX category answering everybody's questions...I even write the codes for some of them...and not just bit s and pieces but the whole thing.
What do you think :)

Hey Pom (ilyas),
Thanks a lot for helping out a bunch. Just wondering, how do you find the time? A busy college student currently in Singapore....yet you find time to help us all out!
Thanks!

: blushing : Well, if I was anywhere close to a Flash guru, I'd say Hell yeah, but humm... I'm not there yet. Thank you nonetheless, Alex.
Unless there's actually a party with naked girls and stuff, of course. Thank you Dan for making that important point.
And where do I find the time? Simple! I don't sleep! Clever, hue?

A sure sign of Masterhood.. denial of talent.
You are a guru Pom. Here's to you making lots of cash with Flash in the future.
I suggest that we create a Kirupaforum award. Many servers create digital awards which people can then place on their sites to show off. I suggest that we create one. I will start working on some ideas, but I'd like imput from People like Pom, Kirupa and especially our artists, Edwin and Kitiara.
We'll get as many submittals together and then vote on our favorites.
My suggestions would include awards in a couple catagories.
---------------------------------------
Kirupa site of the month award (which we've already kind of been doing.)
Kirupa guru award
Kirupa most promising newbie??
any other suggestions would be appreciated.

What if we have a "Kirupaland King of the Month" award, where the recipient gets to don a special graphic or flash animation for a month on their sig. After the King's term, he hands the crown down to the next King of the Week. Kind of like employee of the month.
Everyone nominates and votes on the King, so the burden won't be on Kirupa to pick someone all the time. Clearly Ily is King for now...

a single award would be nice, and certainly would up the prestige value of the thing. I've seen a lot of sites do this though and they seem to like having a few different catagories. Probebly this is because encouragement is the best teacher a programer can have.. so the more encouragement that's going around, the more programing gets done.. of course I'm just guessing.
We'll have to see what K man thinks when he wakes up. (humph, how dare he sleep.. )

Thanks Upu! Actually, I didn't do much :) I found the code for this Lorentz attractor in Flash Math Creativity (Jared Tarbell from www.levitated.net ), and all I did is that random color thing, and the dynamic drawing of the shape. I could watch it spin for hours...
Here's the code (for the www.bit-101.com contest):
_root.createEmptyMovieClip("line",i++);
MovieClip.prototype.drawCircle = function(r, x, y){
this.moveTo(x+r, y);
this.curveTo(r+x, -0.4142*r+y, 0.7071*r+x, -0.7071*r+y);
this.curveTo(0.4142*r+x, -r+y, x, -r+y);
this.curveTo(-0.4142*r+x, -r+y, -0.7071*r+x, -0.7071*r+y);
this.curveTo(-r+x, -0.4142*r+y, -r+x, y);
this.curveTo(-r+x, 0.4142*r+y, -0.7071*r+x, 0.7071*r+y);
this.curveTo(-0.4142*r+x, r+y, x, r+y);
this.curveTo(0.4142*r+x, r+y, 0.7071*r+x, 0.7071*r+y);
this.curveTo(r+x, 0.4142*r+y, r+x, y);}
line.lineStyle(1,0x000000,100);
line.drawCircle(100,0,0);
myPos=new Array(random(10)/10,random(20),random(10));
myVar=new Array(0.01,10,28,8/3);
_root.onEnterFrame=function(){
x1=myPos[0]+myVar[0]*myVar[1]*(myPos[1]-myPos[0]);
y1=myPos[1]+myVar[0]*(myPos[0]*(myVar[2]-myPos[2])-myPos[1]);
z1=myPos[2]+myVar[0]*(myPos[0]*myPos[1]-myVar[3]*myPos[2]);
mc=line.duplicateMovieClip("line"+(i++),i,{_x:myPos[0]*10+210,_y:myPos[1]*10+210,_xscale:z1/3,_yscale:z1/3});
myPos=[x1,y1,z1];}
_root.onMouseDown=function(){
this.onEnterFrame=null;
this.onMouseDown=function(){
loadMovieNum("lorentzBit13.swf",0);}}
line._visible=0;This one's with circles and colorless (too many lines!). Just put the code in the first frame of your movie.

Case in point, he should have a forum category or some souch thing where he can post interesting code and discuss it...I garantee you all that we will all profit from such a resource...because if he cannot write the code he finds it...I certainly don't have the time to find code, I am more of a designer(formerly Art Director and Brand Specialist) but love Flash and actionscript and appreciate someone taking the time to post such things...now instead of going through all posts there shoudl be an area where I can find ily's resources...well what does everybody think???
pom
August 6th, 2002, 03:59 PM
You ARE serious about that... Anyway, there's an open source gallery, so it doesn't make sense to make a "Pom's gallery", does it (though I'd probably like it... :P ).
And no need to say that I'm not the only one producing interesting stuff here, merely the only one bragging about it. But I tell you what could be interesting: to do something like they did in that book, Flash Math Creativity, you take an experiment with all the variations you could think of, how the experiment evolved, and what key variables you can play with. Different shapes, different colors, different scales... That could be a whole new section.
I don't know, we have to talk about that, tell me what you think.

Maybe if you have your own category or something then people can learn about what you post, allowing you to do your stuff and not having to answere to others all the time...get my point

Would have posted something sooner, but I started my new job as Queen of E-Commerce this week, so I've barely been at my desk, let alone a PC. I've met lots of new people and forgotton lots of names. C'est la vie.
Anyway, this sounds like a cool idea to me, and I mean the awards, not the strippers, before anyone decides to get cheeky. :)
When I get 5 mins to myself I'll play around with some graphic-y (is that a word?) type things, and see what comes up.

Would people prefer static graphics, or mini Flash movies for the awards?
And I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd like Edwin's input on this. Where are you, what do you think? :)
upuaut
August 7th, 2002, 10:04 AM
I think that we should get a bunch together and all go over them with a fine toothed critical eye. We'll get ahold of edwin. I see him on AIM every once in a while.
I think that an animated swf with a counterpart static image is the best way to go. Publish settings will let you devise a static image from the first frame of the movie, I think.. or maybe you can set any frame.. I can't remember. :P
Maybe we should have rounds of entries posted for a poll. :-\
I personaly have been working on a few ideas so far on paper, and everything looks dumb to me. I'm hoping that other's will come up with something better. Maybe I'll come up with something today... who knows.
still having preloader problems as well. grrrr

Well the award idea is OK, as long as the award is outlined, and have several different categoeries.
But what about the Flash Guru commity that finds and or creates their own FLA's and posts then discusses them, and perhaps have a tutorial type of posting about it.
I think that would add a valuable resource to the forum, and they could have a award, if they like, for the most interesting or best FLA of the week or month. And perhaps others coudl post some FLA's as suggestions liek in coolwebsites. But more so the team would be responsible for also coming up with some interesting or useful FLA's.
NOt sure if I am making sense

Isnt that what the tutorials are all about? And, Cheers! Pom.. you da man. I think your kind of help is contagious. Most of you don't know this, but Pom helped someone build an interface that calculates psi/per fava beans. And he did it all with 16 lines of code! Simply amazing. I heard he was looking for beta testers. I had to decline.
Congrats, Pom

Anyone still have any ideas? I am very very keen on getting the names of all those who help extensively on the forums out there for the people to know. Maybe a Flash animation that simply displays a random name from a helpful member each time he/she visits the site with a clickable link to their profile/personal site. All the information can be loaded from a variables.txt file. I really think this is a great way to give back to all those such as pom who have helped with keeping the site fresh with new content and such. This will basically be a small box on the left below the contents where the name of a random forum helper will appear.
Cheers!

This is interesting, though I agree that the tutorial section has some similarities. Possibly just doing this, in the tutorial section would be enough.
I was also thinking that it might be interesting to set up a weekly chat room where something like 2 or 3 of us moderators agree to attend, and answer questions in a live setting. Any thoughts on that?

don't fall too far into the shadows of being a mod. Sure mods get more sex, drugs and rock and roll, but behind all that is just a dark lonely mod... with a lot of sex, drugs and rock and roll.

Humm... A bit of seriousness, please.
OK, here's what I have proposed to Kirupa. Tell me what you think about it:
I thought about a whole new section to the site, something a little bit like what Alex proposed. Every month, or week, or whatever, this section would be reserved for a mod to present an experiment. He would provide the basic code, giving leads for users to experiment on their own. Then we could have a dedicated forum where we could all show our work, our codes... And we could possibly have a reward for the best contribution and all.
I've worked on the first one, a simple grid, and I really believe that this can be a lot of fun :)

That sounds like a great idea. I'm all for it... though like I said.. it could probebly be done in the tutorial section.. but if you guys would like it in it's own place, that too is fine with me.
my first will probebly be the newsticker.. it's fresh in my head, and interestingly complex while being simple too. :) Plus.. I can always use polishing on a project like that. My letters are not 100% perfect in their spacing.. I'd love to be able to solve that problem... perhaps having enough other people look at the code will be the trick.. though I may have worked it out already. We'll see.
Well.. let me know what you want me to do guys.
