Same here, I'm not installing it. SP1 works fine for now. As long as it's not broken, I'm not touching it.

Do people suggest that before installing SP2 - that you do a complete reformat of the harddrive and start fresh by installing SP1 then SP2 and other patches etc??
I think thats what I will prob do cos it would be good if it were all fresh....

I dont think it will make much of a difference doing a complete format first. also, I dont think you have to install sp1 before sp2.

Hey, thanks a lot for that link. I am going to order a copy for here at work and one at home personally. This will be a god send when I am installing Windows on a machine without highspeed access.
I have upgraded here at work through thier windows update and have had great success. I wouldn't be too scared fella's.

Basically, you do a clean install of XP with the SP2 contents already in it. Here is an article on how it is done: http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sp2_slipstream.asp :)

slipstream? :-/
Slipstream is the art of making your own Windows XP CD with custom options which install during the OS installation so he basically installs WindowsXP and SP2 at the same time, you can also include other programs like winrar, office and any other program you want as long as it fits on a CD or DVD ;)

Exactly! It's kinda like ghosting your computer, that way, I have most if not all of my software installed when I install windows.

Hey guys, how do you include the other programs... like if i wanted to have office and winrar and my macromedia and adobe suite's install when I installed windows?
btw- thanks for that link Kirupa, that's awesome :) I am going to do this soon as I am in need of a fresh format!

Theres no need to reformat there b3n. I mentioned that I was going to reformat only because I have so much crap installed already.

and where exactly do i go about doing that i had a problem last night that it wouldnt let me run an executable file and it really got me p!$$ed off so i decided to uninstall it, if i can get over this and any other security issues i might consider installign it again
kirupa

A lot of the security issues can be disabled by going to Tools | Internet Options || Advanced. Under Security, uncheck like 3 or 4 boxes there that don't allow you to run Active Content. Also, on some EXE files, you can right click on it and select Properties. There are some security checkboxes that you can uncheck that will allow you to run the program.
But, if your computer is running fine under SP1a and you aren't interested in any of the other performance tweaks, you don't have to hurry and reinstall it again :)

well, in the end i guess it doesn't matter tooo much wether or not you install sp2 or not, a lot of people don't want to install it because (shock horror) MS is going for security over "user freindliness"/"point and click" wow, i never thought i'd see the day

Its up to the user to make sure their computer is protected and at a state of security where hackers or unwanted material will not filter through their system. Microsoft are doing what they can in the rising issues of security vurnerbility. Microsoft are not focing anyone to install it, thery are only reccomending it for XP users. I installed Sp2 a week ago and I haven't encountered any technicalities. I also reformatted before installing it so now my computer runs relatively fast. Its such a good feeling when your computer is in order, when you just got minimal icons. If people have problems with sp2, whose to say you have to install it? I installed it to raise the security of my system. Whether or not its more "protective" or not, atleast its better than how it was. Just dont complain when your computer is stuffed and you blame Microsoft for it.

No matter what i try nothing works.
MOD EDIT:
#1 - This thread is 5 and a half years old, the link may be invalid now.
#2 - I'm pretty sure it's just the install CD, and NOT the license key. You need an existing license key in order to use Windows XP.
If you still want it for free, I'm pretty sure Microsoft has a 180 day trial of either XP or even a newer OS on their site. Check there.
Locked to avoid spam and because this thread simply isn't relevant anymore. Should I hide the old link as well?
