Following this tutorial:

Start off by making a new image. Add a new layer (Layer 2 here). Add you text to the new layer, make sure its black, the color can be altered later on. Also your font should be very thick, especially if its not as big as the example.
Choose Selections > Modify > Contract and contract your selection by a few pixels depending on text sized. I contracted by 4 pixels.



Except when I go to Selections Modify there is only the option for border.

How do I select only the text?

If you want to select the text then hold down Ctrl and then in your layers palatte, click on the layer with the text.

You will also need to rasterize your layer I believe (or I could be wrong... can't remember right now)

Right click on the layer and choose "Rasterize Layer".
