built a computer today - problem

all the devices are in, RAM, CPU is in.. all power stuff is in.. but when we go to power up the fans spin for a little bit then stops. it does the exact thing when there isnt a CPU in as we just tested that..

any thoughts?

check the back of your power supply it has a little switch wiht the voltage settings switch it to the other voltage im sure this is your problem post back your results ;)

there arent any voltage switches

again check your power supply in the back where the plug is theres a little black or red switch that has voltage numbers 110 o 220 i bet yours is in 220 change it to 110 it should be right under where the power cord plugs into the power supply, if this isnt the case then its most likely your motherboard has its bios reset jumper drive on when it should be off, check your motherboard manual for the reset bios jumper and in what position it should be in

yeah i've been looking for it in the manual and cant find anything about the reset jumper :(

there is a "clear_CMOS" one? *shrugs*

CMOS clear is usually JP1, check for something with J and P and 1 on the mobo, it's usually labled.

do the clear one or pull the battery out (looks like a flat silver disc) wait 45 seconds then insert it back...also

what speed processor, what mobo, how many fans, how many drives..etc

need to know what your power demand is...each device has a demand...

how many watts is your power supply?

another thing to check...

Make sure that your processor heat sink is on right. I know with the newer P4 chips, you really have to put the heatsinks on correctly. I've had them on so tightly before that you could pick up the whole machine by the heatsink (don't try this!), but the machine still wouldn't boot up. Once I took the heatsink loose and popped it back on there it started working.

Check your powersupply must be running on to low/high volts, or is the sinc connected properly? If your power supply doesn't have a switch on the back to change volts, then there is something odd, becuase I was sure everyone did.

yup some times sellers have them at 220 volts which is way to high but most motherboards nowadays have a built in feature which wont allow the pc to turn on if its not set at the correct voltage, trust me a friend of mine had a pc he couldnt turn on for a week he took it to my house i checked all everything was fine then i looked at teh power supply and wadda ya know the happy switch was at 220 volts switched it an walllah a working pc he was very angry he didnt think of it first rotflmao :D

it ended up being a faulty power supply. they replaced it and all is fine now.
