how about a typography battle?

Yo kirupstaz,

Have you guys ever had a typography battle? Would go somthing like this... we choose a word or phrase and then illustrate it using both typography and design skillz in either vector, raster, or vector/raster. For example we could take the word "complex" and then produce illustrations that are complex or illustrate the actual word "complex" in a complex kind of way.

If your talking about the rounded white word that says "simple", of course I made it, after all I am a graphic designer. As for the bitmap font at the bottom, I didnt make that, it is just for communication purposes.

It would be cool to see how different people around the world percieve certain words, and how they would illustrate them.

Each of us here have our strong points and our weak points, you for one, have a strong point for typography judging by the stuff you just displayed. There are many awesome designers here that you obviously haven't met yet so don't think that there aren't any good designers here cause I'll tell you now, I've seen a lot better stuff than yours posted here, no offense of course. Just browse through the Drawing and Design section and you'll see what I mean, if you dig deep enough you'll see there's some amazing work posted in the past.

i'll battle you...lay down the rules...i usually use a combo of both traditional design (paper, pencil, exacto knife stuff) with the computer. Here are a couple of my recent works...

They are huge 11" x 11" and I have actual print copies of them. I would have saved them for web but they are way too big.

There are 3 designs, the project restrictions were that they had to be black and white, but I can work in color also.

Yes, a Mod has to officially declare the rules, but if you all agree upon something then we can do that, but the mod must make it official.

So if everyone agrees with what you said, then those are the rules.

Also, please specify a width and height of the canvas, I am not really sure what a good size would be for typography.

If your opponents all agree on 500x500, then thats good.


File type never matters :)

And you post your submission on the last day it is due (don't want to give people ideas of what yours looks like before they are done.. that gives them an advantage), you can A) Post it as an attachment or B)upload it to your server and link to it.

Sorry guys for not replying for a few days... I have been disconected from the world for a little while. But Im back now and its awsome to see that the rules have been kinda lay down while ive been gone. SWEET. I love the idea of using the word "evolve". That was really cool. I also agree that 500 x 500 jpg or gif is a nicely rounded size for the battle too.

umm.... thinking of any other rules. Can use Illustrator, Photoshop and hand drawn too. Ultimate goal is to visually reproduce your own interpretation of a word that we will eventually decide on using for the battle.

Oh and for that font I just drew it in Illustrator using the guides for the x height of the letters and the same radius for all the rounded parts of the letters too. I made the stroke really thick and gave it a rounded tip and then turned the stroke into a fill by using one of the functions in illustrator and then just combined all the paths by using the pathfinder (very handy vector tool).

ummm.... my reasoning is that: seeing as it is a typo battle and we are using the word "evolve" I decided to use the word evolve. I wanted to mix a little bit of oldskool style typography with newskool type and come up with a juxtaposing style piece of work that would perhaps arrouse your eyeballs. anyway hope you enjoy it and thankyou for everyone participating in the battle I am really happy to see the others...

For sure! Definately down with a calaboration. We should try doing an all vector remix of a new project. It would be similar to what rinzen (http://www.rinzen.com) did from Brisbane, Australia. We could get somone to start a new one and then when they're finished they could post the pic and send on the vectors to the next person to remix and just keep it going and going.

I don't think it would matter what tools you used as long as your end product was a demonstration of unique typography. No reason to exclude people just because they can't use a certain tool.
