View Full Version : Nintendo-like games for Xbox

Heh... so my brother got me an Xbox for my birthday this year, back in April, and I've been trying in vain to find good games for it. I'm a big fan of Nintendo (I wish I had a Game Cube)... I like series like Zelda and Metroid... Games with more focus on the story than the actual gameplay, where you can immerse yourself in legend in a way. (Okay, Metroid may not fit there, with the legend and all, but it's still got some some kickass stories.) I don't like games where all you do is run around shooting people, a la Halo. And I tend to prefer games that are family oriented, i.e. no blatant cursing, half naked girls, blowing people's heads off, etc.

So far, the only Xbox games I've found that I really like are Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Anybody have any suggestions? Maybe lesser known games? I'm not really informed when it comes to games anyway (I hadn't heard of Crimson Skies until a couple of days ago) so even if there's something you consider blatantly obvious, it probably wouldn't hurt to mention it anyway. :P

I find it funny that the two Xbox games you mentioned are out on other platforms, PoP is on PS2 and Gamecube, and KoTOR is on PC.

Yeah I know they are, I actually played KOTOR as a PC game, I don't own it for Xbox, but I thought I'd throw it in there to say I've already played it and there's no need to mention it. It would be so much easier if I'd just gotten a Game Cube for my birthday. :( But my brother's gone and gotten addicted to Halo, and I've already bought PoP for Xbox, so there's no sense in selling the Xbox now.

In his defense, I did say at one point that I would like an Xbox. Unfortunately, I neglected to mention that I would like a GameCube much more. :blush:

I'm a girl. And don't say I only like Nintendo 'cause I'm a girl and Nintendo's girly. I get that too often. I like Nintendo because I enjoy stories. It's like a good book. Lots of people like books. Girls and guys. And I just happen to like my games to be like books, except that I want to be the main character of the story, and actually take part in the events of it. ;P

Heh, there are tons of stories where powerful monsters take over the world and shoot everything, and if they're well done, sure I'd enjoy them. But well-done to me doesn't have much to do with graphics and special effects. It's more how the story is told... If it's obvious that it's a war between good and evil, and more emphasis is put on ridding the world of the monsters, then sure, I'd give it a try. But if it's more like "Try to blow this guy's head off as far as possible" or "Make a pretty design on the wall with this guy's blood" then no thanks.

Actually... don't most games include something about monsters taking over the world?

So how come you don't like Halo?

All you do is run around shooting? Okay that's like the most false comment about games. You obviously haven't played the game at all or to the end of it.

Well I only played the single player version of Halo up to I think the 4th level, I don't remember what it was called. And yeah, I'm probably wrong about Halo, or biased. I think I just got bored. But a game like Prince of Persia, that's sort of monsters taking over Persia. If you consider Sand Creatures to be monsters. And there are a few times when all you do is fight off Sand Creatures. But there are also a lot of times when you have to solve puzzles and evade traps, etc. Plus, there's the side story with Farah. And the way it's carried out, it is a story, with the Prince as the narrator. So even if all you did was walk around a map for 15 minutes, you've gone through a chapter and it feels like you've accomplished something. That's what I mean, when I say that a game can be about monsters taking over the world, and still be a great game. It shouldn't be just about monsters, which is what Halo was to me. (For the first few levels, that is, I really shouldn't comment about Halo because I haven't played all the way through and for that I apologize.)

It's alright - I understand you. Billions of people think halo was great and you just have a different taste ;). Just like me and consoles :D.

Some levels on halo takes hours to complete. When on co-op with your brother or friend (in my case) it's just the most fun thing in the world. So much strategy. I always say "alright you take the left, I got the right" and we end up killing everything in one level :D.

But like you said, if it's more of story, it's better to you :).

I have to admit it's fun watching my brother and sister play on co-op. They aren't very good at strategy it seems. They keep bumping into each other or shooting each other, or running each other over. It's hilarious.

Anyway, I think I've hijacked my own thread. :h: Back to topic, anyone know any games I might like?

If you are talking PC's- Ground Control II, that game is soooo cool. Might not be what you are looking for, but it has a fun sci-fi story and the strategy is reeeeeaaaly good. Get the demo www.groundcontrol2.com

If you want a console game- Harvest moon!!!!! YAYAYAYAYAY! or, ummm.. uhhh.. :D

Sushi - I'm looking for Xbox games. And as far as I know, Harvest Moon isn't out for Xbox, as much as I would like it to be. :P

Well then, sorry to say hifi, but I don't think xbox is meant for you. Xbox is more of that kind of console where online deathmatchs and amazing rpg's are meant to be played.

Heh, I already know the Xbox is not meant for me. But that doesn't change the fact that my brother got me one, and I can't return it because he and my sister love it. So I'm just looking to make the most of it. There must be at least a few games out there available, that's all I'm looking for.

a really good game for xbox, I mean really good for a family, is Fusion Frenzy. It's like a party game, just like Mario Party 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11.... or 68. Check it out, if you ever bought halo, go to game demos and click fusion frenzy.

Yup, done that, and it is my new Mario Party. :P But it's really only good as a party game. It's Mario Party with only Minigames as far as I can tell, and so it's only good for multiplayer. But I'm really looking for single player games

Oh then try doing Splitner Cell or Metal Gear Solid. You see I don't know what kind of gamer you are, but Splinter Cell is extremely fun. You have to be very stealthy while taking out missions and whatnot. Only rated T so, it's not too bad ;)
Also you can try Rally Sport Challenge 2 or NFSU : Need for Speed Underground.
Hrmm, or you could try DDR! I'm a heavy DDR player, and man that game is fun. But hey, if those don't fit your needs, I'll give some more.

Sounds cool Grinch, thanks a lot. I'll be sure to check out some of those. I completely forgot about Splinter Cell. :P I've only heard good things about that game and have been meaning to check it out. Would you say it has a lot of replay value or is it something I should just rent for a week or so?

I thought my first post was a pretty good explanation of what kind of gamer I am, but then again, maybe not... I tend to prefer linear games, where you have a good idea of where you have to go next, and there are only a couple of ways to get there. Hmm.. what else can I say? A list of all the games I can think of that I've ever really really liked:
- Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (The only other one I've played is PoP2 and I only played one level, so I can't say much)
- Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
- Metroid (I haven't played Prime but I loved all the others)
- Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
- Pokemon Red and Blue (as much as I hate to say it, they were fun)
- Donkey Kong 64

... and that's all I can think of at the moment. (There aren't many, I guess I'm picky. :P) Maybe that'll tell you something more about what kinds of games I like.

[EDIT] When I say PoP2, I mean what you can unlock from the Sands of Time. :P

Hifi, Grinch is TOTALLY right with Splinter Cell, but if you get that, i suggest the PC version. That game roxxors.

And yes, it is linear.

Of course, of course. :P I went to the website, it looks awesome, and I'll download the demo as soon as I get back home this weekend where I don't have a download limit. *mutters obsenities about the residence download limit*

[EDIT] Still wondering if I should buy Splinter Cell or rent it... If it's one of those games that you can really only play once, why shell out $50CDN+ when I can play it for $4?

Good Replay, I played through the game 2 times on normal and 1 time on hard.

The only reason i stopped playing is because Ubisoft went ape **** and released a patch that messed up my MP.

One game that I would reccomend to you that is VERY much in the tradition of Nintendo with a great story and immersive gameplay is "Beyond Good and Evil". This is a fantastic game that should not be missed. It's only short coming is that it is, too short :(

Contrary to what Grinch has said, this is NOT the console to be looking for great RPG's, as of yet anyway. There are some great ones on the way but nothing to write home and tell mom about now.

Xbox is not great for platformers, RPG's and games like Animal Crossing or Harvest Hoon, it's the home of Action, Shooters, Sports and More Action and more Shooters. It's great for what it is, and I love my Xbox, but the Cube is always going to be Number one when it comes to actual story and gameplay.

Hey SS, I own (as in I purchased, not "I pwn this game I am so good") the GCN Harvest Moon game. It is pretty fun. It was only $40 new, not bad for a new game.

I agree, it's a great game. My girl loves it, as do a few of my other friends. I don't have enough time to really get into a game like that but I sure do love watching people play it :)

I probably should've read the other posts but... how do you not like Halo? But then again, I don't like Zelda and you could ask me the same question.

Ohh wait, I have an answer: I hate RPG's! Too much story and not enough game! (this applies to every RPG, IMO) If I wanted a story I'd go read a book.

Again, just my opinion and I figured I'd put my two cents in. Thankyou for your time.

You know what's really weird though... the reason I haven't checked this thread all weekend - I rented Beyond Good and Evil. I must have sensed you thinking it Thursday night when I went to Blockbuster. ;) I'm about 3/4 through right now, and I'm loving it.

I love that game, I have yet to finish it though, I have too many games on the go right now. I am trying to Finish Rid****, while playing through my career in Fight Night, while playing through my seasons in NHL 2K4 and Inside Drive 2004, while trying to get through a tough spot in Splinter Cell.

Too many games for a guy that plays like a hour a day! I need less work and more spare time!

I'm really pissed. Because i went to rent Rid**** for GC at blockbuster but that STUPID place never has maore than 5 GC games at a time.... Ughhh i HATE them.

Really Sushi? The Blockbuster right by my house has a ton more GC games than XBox ones... They have about as many XBox games as they do for N64, while they have 2 aisles of GC. That's really weird.

Well, start looking forward to Sudeki and Fable, as they are going to be the RPG's to beat... FFXII looks nice for PS2, but I didn't like the linear nature of FFX. Fable = pwn! You might enjoy Arx Fatalis for XBOX, which is a dungeon crawler / RPG. Pretty good if you like that sort of thing.

Good to see more girl gamers! I wish there were some down here in AZ. I guess it's not as obvoius as "guy gamers". I'm a closet nerd myself (as in no one knows I am a computer designer/game junkie), probobly because I'm mostly associated with musicians and people of that clique (I'm a music business major). It's best left like that though. I already get too many tech-help calls from my parents! ;)

First off Sushi - I'm sorry to tell you, but they don't make Rid**** for the GC :( It's an Xbox only game right now with talk of porting it over to the PS2 (I really don't want to see the end result, it won't be pretty)

As for Girl Games, I am very lucky. My Fiancee is a huge gamer, she actually playes more than me :) Mostly GBASP, but with a healthy doese of GC. She's a big Zelda freak like myself, and we didn't even know it when we met eachother :love:

I cannot wait for Fable, it's going to rock! Same with Kameo, I am looking forward to another quality Rare title. The one game I want more than anything on the Xbox thoug his Jade Empire. That game is going to own me for a long long time. It's my 3rd most wanted game beind the new Zelda and RE4.
