what types of design software can you use on linux? I'm told many european countries use Linux, is it better than microsoft?

it really depends on what you're used to, their are many tools that work for linux, check out http://www.linux.org/apps/ for a list of applications that work for linux

GIMP is good: http://gimp.org/
I use the GIMP to do design, and GVim to write code (it's a text editor not a WYSIWYG app).

I think it's better than winblows by far(posting this using MF on Gentoo Linux "Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.7) Gecko/20040704 Firefox/0.9.1"), but it's all a matter of opinion and experience.

Designing is mostly something best done with MAC :), the reason people use *nix OS systems is mostly because of security and stability. Also its a free
