Colin Moock's "ActionScript for Flash MX: The Definitive Guide" (Second Edition)

for Flash, hum, there are a ton, maybe someone else will have a great recommendation

For getting into actionscript I found Brendan Dawes' 'Drag Slide Fade' really useful. It doesn't claim to be a bible of any kind but instead it outlines a handful of core techniques that this guy uses on a daily basis.

They are very clearly explained and it is also easy to see how you can tweak and combine these techniques to produce something original.

I don't come from a programming background so this book really helped de-mystify actionscript for me.
