creating (attached) pattern in Illustrator

hi Everybody,

I`m trying to create the attached pattern in Illustrator.
I used a 45 degree angle line and created a patern, but the diestances between the lines are to large... the shorter the lines, the less accurate the pattern. any ideas??

When you drew the dots (before defining it as a pattern), was it set up within a perfect square, so the diagonal was from lower to upper corner?

I though this had to do something with it...so it`s actually just (2?) dots that have to be in a perfect square? easy to do in AI?
