Hey everyone,
Check this out:
Charles Osborne (1894–1991) of Anthon, Iowa, USA, started hiccupping in 1922 while attempting to weigh a hog before slaughtering it. He was unable to find a cure, and continued hiccupping until February 1990, a total of 68 years!

Osborne led a normal life in which he had two wives and fathered eight children. The only discomfort from his hiccuping, he claimed, was the constant risk of losing his false teeth!

During the first few decades, he hiccupped up to 40 times a minute, slowing to 20 a minute in later years. He finally stopped in 1990 – after an estimated 430 million spasms – and died the following year.http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/index.asp?id=48509

I had the hiccups for a few minutes last week, and I thought that was bad :P

Cheers!
Kirupa

Wow, sheds a good light on Iowa -- farmer weighing a hog, typical ;)

I had heard about this before but never knew the guy was in my home state hehe. That would suck pretty bad, but it could be a good conversation piece! lol.

40 times a minute? That's like breathing?

I can't image living a normal life with that? You couldn't finish a sentence without hiccuping 4 times during it.

If he kept hicupping, he may still be alive.

See, it is all a quality of life issue...

hiccup cure, guaranteed everytime to work

when your hiccuping, get a glass of water. Just after a hiccup, take a moutful of water but hold it in your mouth and hold your breath at the same time, for as long as you can. Then when you can't hold your breath any longer breath out and swallow the water at the same time. That should do it. If it doesn't...do the same thing but try jumping up and down on the spot while holding your breath and the water in your mouth.

Guaranteed to work everytime :thumb:

My cure, that has never failed, hold your breath, and make your stomach kinda push up, like you are hurling but not :) and hold your breath for as long as possible and push and it should go :D

Mine is.

Take a big breath, close your mouth, then swallow

then without exhaling take another breath close your mouth and swallow.

Keep doing this for as long as you can, it becomes harder to swallow each time, after 3 times it becomes almost imposible to swallow..... and you just want to let it all out.

reminds me of that episode of the simpsons where they had the guy who had been hicupping for like 12 years or so and he looked like a wreck... it went something along the lines of

 "kill me" "kill me" ... :P

Wanna put money on that guarantee? I just hold my breath or do something to keep my mind off it and it usually does the trick.

yea i think sometimes hiccups (for me) are almost a psychological thing. if i hold my breath and concentrate solely on holding my breath (almost meditation style), and exhale and take another deep breath and keep concentrating, my hiccups go away within 2 minutes.

Also i think sometimes swallowing water as you hiccup reverses the hiccup effect and stops it, not sure though.... ;)
