Man, I'm pissed and very upset....got a call from my mom that their dog, a cute little thing, was attacked by a pittbull today while she was out walking it...they walked by a house and this dog came running out and grabbed my mom's dog by the neck. People came running out of their houses with bats and hockey sticks to get the dog off of poor Shamrock. I guess this dog has attacked people before too, and I ask "Why is this dog still allowed to be in society?" The house is on a school route, which means at least twice a day elementary school kids walk by the front of this house. What has to happen before it is put down? I know there are good dogs and bad dogs, but more importantly, there are BAD dog owners. My parents' neighbour is a cop, and he got a call about it before my mom even got poor little Shamrock home. He called the police, and they said that he has to call Animal Control, which he did and they met with my mom this afternoon...man, I'm just so upset about it, she was my dog for a couple years too, until I moved out...she's hopefully going to be ok, she has some cuts and stuff, and tomorrow mom and dad are taking her to the family vet to see if there is any internal damage, and if so, she'll need surgery...man I just don't get it!!! Why would you keep a dog around that has such a bad temperament?...It attacked a neighbour once while he was taking out his garbage...they know the thing is dangerous...ugg

Shamrock as a puppy, though she never did get much bigger than this...man, I'm pissed!!!

i had a tiny dog myself, lasa apso. my mom was walking him when a rottie grabbed him and chewed him up real bad. he needed a whole lot of surgery and eventually died from it.
i hate to say it, but it does destroy the dog :( emotionally at least, and usually causes future problems as well.
best of luck

Man, that's so horrible..I'm sorry to hear that, like what are the owners of these dogs thinking?..they must know the character of their pets, although I know, they are still animals, and true accidents can happen, but you should know a little about how your dog is going to react in social settings....from what my dad described, Shamrock's cuts and stuff aren't too too bad, and if nothing internal is wrong, that's great, but yeah, I hope it doesn't have too much of an impact on her emotionally, although I fear it will...she is actually a cross between a lasa apso and a rottie, with german shephard and pekenese in there..all 4 breeds..a weird mix, I know...thanks for your support..it's just a sad sad thing.

I'm not sure why you would ever want to own a dog like that... A pitbull I mean...

Well, I have had friends who have had pitbulls, and very well behaved pitbulls. I think it also has a lot do to with training. Apparently the owner of the dog is some biker dude who gets on the nerves of all his neighbours with all his biker buddies..so I have no doubt he trained his dog to be a "protector". There are actually more documented cases of German Shephard attacks each year, than there are pitbull attacks...but yeah, I agree..I want a mate and a companion. My dog is a border collie/black lab cross and she's perfect. I wouldn't want anything around that could "turn" on you at any time.

Im sorry to hear about shamrock Adman, hope she feels well but hey isnt she a rockweiler so she is suppose to grow into an adult size?
Adam

Thanks, Minimalistik..she is full grown at about 12" high...she has two small dogs mixed in her so her legs capped out really short...I wish she could grow into a full Rottie for a little payback on that dog that jumped her!!

sorry to hear about that - that other dog should've been behind a tight fence
for the record though:
pit bulls are no more prone to mean-ness than most others ... they're just so much better at the *violent arts* if raised to be that way
I just recently had to put one down (from sickness) and he was the biggest baby on the planet - loveable as anything

rockweilers in their own right have been known to do some damage. good thing your aunt wasnt injured, on the bright side.

man that sucks.
My girlfriend played with a pit bull when she was younger and she remembers it being incredibly gentle and fun. She loved that dog and people who saw them said the dog was affectionaite (sp?) towards her. I guess this proves it's all in the upbringing, bring them up right and they can turn out to be a nice, friendly, loving dog.
Give it to this b*****d biker guy and this is what happens. I think if you gave him a Jack Russel he'd probably turn it to behave like his pit bull does. Hate to say it but maybe your right...maybe they should destroy his dog.
Or him, whatevers easiest ;)

The thing about pitbulls and rotties - they can be the sweetest most loving dogs in the world (I've met quite a few), and yes the type of owner a dog has says so much, but some breeds just can't get over that part of their brain that has been programmed by humans to do what they are supposed to do. The aggression comes out when they are about 2 years old. Friends of my sisters (very responsible dog owners) had a super sweet rottie mix that snapped one day, out of the blue, hopped their 6 foot fence and attacked a man and his child. Luckily the man was a sympathetic dog owner and didn't sue but my sister's friends were horrified. They had the option of putting their dog down or giving him the equivalent of doggie Ritalin, every day, for the rest of his life. Rather than live with a dog that was no longer himself they opted to put him down. It was heartbreaking. After a year of mourning, and having learned their lesson, they got a sweet super dumb golden retriever.
A local story with a not so happy ending:
A couple of weeks ago a couple was arrested for not stopping their pitbull from biting their children. Both kids (ages 4 and 7 I think) had been hospitalized MULTIPLE TIMES for dog bites. The incident that finally got them arrested? Their little girl was trying to walk out the front door to go to school when the dog attacked. Her screaming brought the neighbors (not the parents) who called the police. The REALLY sad thing? The mom elected NOT to ride in the ambulance with the little girl but stay home with the traumatized dog.
I think I know what else I'd like to do with that antifreeze. :{

Thanks everyone for your support, it's a tough thing...and get this, I talked to my mom's friend today that was dogsitting poor, distraught shamrock, and she informed me that Animal Control is going to do absolutely nothing about it!!! They said they can't until there is a formal complaint of this dog attacking a human!! Man, so basically, one of the many school kids that frequent the sidewalk out front of this house has to be mauled to death before this BEAST can be put down...I have huge sympathy for people and their dogs, and I fully agree that almost any dog can "snap" at any point, regardless of training and upbringing, but to know that this has happened int the past, and the owners did nothing to make sure it wouldn't happen again, just reflects the total neglegence of these owners...man...gotta love the "sit and wait until the dog REALLY screws up" mentality!! still smirking at the anitfreeze comment though ;) And thanks everyone for listening to me rant, it's just I had no one to unleash this on..g/f was in bed, and it had been building up for a couple hours...It's nice to have a place like Kirupa.. you guys are great :D

I didn't want to say anything, I heard the same lame *** story. Legally I couldn't do a thing about it, cost me and my family a few thousand.
Sry man, **** shame it is.

Pretty scary when you think about it..you know this dog isn't done attacking "things"..my mom had actually first thought the dog ran out of the house and was going to run away, she went to grab the dog's collar to bring it back to the owner, when the owner yelled for her not to touch it, that's when it grabbed Shamrock...could have been my mom, and she's a pretty frail lass...at about 120 pounds and 54 years old...**** scary!!! It's ok, Digitalosophy, I had the same inclination, but was hoping it might not be true in this situation...Did anything ever happen to the Rottweiler that attacked your dog?

thats true about your mom. that was my whole case. what if it were a human, or even worse a small child?
this was a huge thing for us. the owner was a half of wise guy who watched too many gangsta movies. the dog was a guard for his construction company around the corner from my house.
what happened to the Rottweiler you ask? funny story actually. there is a family across the street from me with 3 children. the father is a real cool guy, crazy bastard too. they were real upset when this happened because the Rottweiler actually got out, going through their yard (they live off the corner of the construction company). so this guy flipped out big time when he heard this.
i don't know what he did, but he must of feed the Rottweiler rat poisoning or something. the owner of the dog comes to my house that week and starts talking all types of ****, saying were all dead, blah blah blah, that we killed his dog, and all this other garbage.
i ended up fighting the guy like twice because of this, and my nieghbor beat him down once or twice as well.
big mess man, real big mess.
and what sucks is at the end, my dog still died.

Wow!!! Well, the owner got his just desserts if you ask me...sad ending..but it's good to know that neighbours look out for their own..And what an a-hole having to pull a tough guy attitude with you after his dog atatcked yours..man, some people are simply not fit to be on this planet!!!
Kinda good update though, just got off the phone with dad, Shamrock has been looked at by the family vet, they shaved her, and there were about half a dozen pucture wounds...ouch...but internally she seems fine, and even BETTER..while they were at the vets, someone else brought in a really big dog, and Shamrock went over to try to play with it...so hopefully she wont be too traumatized..man, I feel pretty happy about that!!!
