Ok so, yay, I have broadband. And still trying to get stuff like p2p apps to work, and video confrencing, but one thing I really want is IRC ? do I need to open a port on my router ? which and how ? :D
I'm using US Robotics 9003. (awfull question for someone that spent a year on a cisco networking course! :sigh: )

Shouldn't need it to unless you have it set to block.
Then yes you could just open up the port it uses.

IRC uses port 6667. Open that up, and it should work.
For debugging, you can always use good ol' telnet.
telnet irc.banetele.no 6667
if you get something like:
NOTICE AUTH :*** Looking up your hostname...
NOTICE AUTH :*** Checking Ident
NOTICE AUTH :*** No Ident response
NOTICE AUTH :*** Found your hostname
then it ought to work from a GUI client.

I'm behind a broadband router (wireless) and IRC works fine for me. Just go in the settings and make sure nothing's blocking that port that njs mentioned.

Thanks folks,
It just sits there saying "Connecting To irc.efnet.net..."
I tried to work out opening ports from this guide (http://www.beauchamp001.f2s.com/router/) but I must be doing something wrong.

well, don't dismiss the fact that the server may also be down ;)
for EFnet i use irc://irc.easynews.com
