Well I really like youse guys, so I thought I would share what's been cooking with me in Flash for like, months. It actually began as a text-based combat system on my ti-86 in my junior year, but flash is PERFECT conversion for it :D

don't think I showed you guys this before.

note:regardless of who you choose, stickoman (the blue haired guy) is what you get. Also, you cant enter a name. I got bored with the intro screen pretty quick, I'm gonna fix it later :D

http://www.passedtime.com/mulepack/stuff/duelOOP%20(old).swf

it's a really basic fighting/rpg game. The pictures are crap, I know. I'm going to fix em all up later (just like everything else, eh :sigh: )
Basically you each hit each other until one runs out of HP, and then you can't hit the buttons (man I shouldn't post this it's really crappy!)

I am hoping to fix most of these bugs now that I'm doing it OOP (as best I can), things like the shadow moving and such should be easy to fix then right...

Anyway, it is completely random at least. Chooses a random BG (from 2 so far) and a random enemy (from 2 so far) and random EHP/EMP. So... what do ya think... well look at it's POTENTIAL...

hint: right clk +play to see other characters and bgs

it's hard for me too say anything negative, cos i dont know ANYthing aout game programming and such.
But i think it has potential, are you gonnamake more attacks? and like money you get when you defeat an enemy for bying upgrades and such?
anyway, if you need any help on the graphics, tell me, i can make some stuff if you want.

looks good so far IMO, just keep it up!

I see that you have plagerized most of the characters from Strong Bad's Trogdor game. Well stolen. I couldn't actually get anything to happen once I got into the game. I kept on clicking attack but nothing happened.

EDIT: Oh! You have to click attack then the bad guy.
For some reason at the minute it reminds me of those Pokemon games on the gameboy. I think it's the turn based fighting, I don't usually go in for that kind of thing.
You're right about the pictures/graphics but they're the easy part. The code is the tricky (underlined for emphasis) part.
You should work on adding some more variation to the fighting and add some sounds in like punch noises and yelps of pain.

Good work though, it has certainly got a lot of potential if you can pull it off.

thanks guys for the responses.

@rdj: yah, I'm going to have more attacks, including magic/possibly special skills/attacks.
Also was thinking about maybe making it an ongoing thing... such as, you can get money, as you said, and upgrades is a good idea. And I could then let them store the progress in a flash 'cookie' (forgot what they're called:P), maybe keep all the stuff in a database and let people fight other people. I need to learn a LOT more before I can even think about this though. As it is, I may just be making a small battle game that you can play to pass time... I'll have to have some rewarding aspect though.
Okay, this is getting long, heh. But the game I made on my ti-86, it's like a LEGEND at school, it's weird. (this really is related to the response... I think...) But I would need to use someone's calc and look at the games they had and it would be there; it would jsut get passed from person to person. A minority actually LIKED it though; even though it was just repetative and sorta dull, some people liked the meaningless level ups and such. I had two kids come into my job last year, after I had graduacted HS for like a year, and they start freaking out, when they somehow realized I had made the game they had on their calculator. Anyway... just saying some people like pointless games heh...
@ flash gordon: yes, I did steal quite a bit from the trogdor game. Eventually they will be secret characters... heh. I lvoe freakin hsr.
And yah you gotta click the enemy after you click attack, a lot of people don't get it. :P I'm thinking of somehow making the little cursor like FF games so people know where they can attack.
And I'm going to go update the graphics and add some sounds now, sounds are so easy I should have done it earlier. Thanks man.

Any more comments welcome! thanks

hmm, I've been thinking about the graphics. Would pixel art look good/be a good idea? I don't know much about it, read through some threads, sounds hard... time consuming... but I really like old snes style pixel art... any ideas?
oh and rdj, I have been thinking about it, and would like to take you up on your offer to help with graphics if you are still up for it.
thanks guys

I have been working some on the game. It is no longer functioning, only the hero can hit cause it won't change turns. :P
But I added the hit sound (the bst I could find :P) and added a new intro page. Dont choose anyone it doesnt matter jsut hit start. I jsut wanted to drop the 'scene' and make it frames.
Also added new pic for hero, and a new enemy (fish). They are not very good but a bit better than before. I drew hero in paint then imported to fireworks (for transparency) then imported to flash. I think I like the more jagged look of these characters, flash is too 'weird smooth'.

@rdj: well if you want, you could draw some enemies or other characters to choose from? I don't reeally have set dimensions, was thinking 100x200 for heros and 100x100 for enemies, but it can change at any time. In fact, it doesn't matter just keep em centered.
And if you have any dieas I would lvoe to hear em. thanks

make the recent actions meny lots smaller and maybe put it in the top left cornerHmm, I don't know if I can make it much smaller, but hows this. I can't remember if this was my original intention or not, but, If I put it up top and made it a drop down box, maybe a tiny square that expands onRelease. That way it takes up hardly any space at all, and it really is't necessary. I think I had been playing star wars galaxies when I did that and it had a neat thing similar to it :P
