For my Intro to Graphic Design Class (for which I should have gotten a waiver, because I do this for a living. Creating a corporate identity isn't new and I'm not learning anything - I'm teaching other students :p).

Not giving the students an option on the type of company we would build a logo for or its name, our professor charged the class with creating a record label logo. Hip-Hop, Soul, and Reggae are the musical genres the label covers, and the name has to be Beat.

I worked with a few images, most of them good on their own:

Nowhere in our guidelines does it say the label has to be an American company. So, after thinking about it, I decided I really wanted to do the company from a Japanese perspective. Or at the very least, my take on the Japanese perspective ;) This isn't an American company trying to look Japanese, but a Japanese company itself - say headquartered in Tokyo, with artists on the label who speak & sing/rap in Japanese. Not necessarily English.

Just big fun to work with colors like this and such bubbly imagery. I just hope the word in Japanese on the left actually says "beat". I spent a few hours matching up characters and using online Hiranga, Katakana, Kanji, Romaji, etc. dictionaries to get the right word, then matched it up with a great Japanese font I have :)

Yeah, I do too. It's just what's expected, and I wanted to try and take it in a different way. I may still use the other, not sure, taking my stuff to class today

MikeJust duplicate the main shape and scale it down. there aint a easier way to make multiple strokes ,not that i know of. Easy way to scale the main shape is by using the scale tool, with the object selected press S on the keyboard, then go to the middle of the shape, alt + right click brings up a menu, set your settings, then click on copy :thumb:

Bleutuna!! :!:

Take your Vector piece. CTRL+C. Then CTRL+B to paste BEHIND. Keep that item selected, and then go to the STROKE palette. Now, make the stroke large. You can continue this as much as you want, increasing the number each time you paste behind.

umm to be honest the katakana doesn't really say beat... well as far as i can read it anyway. The font you've got, while looking cool, is really hard to read and i didn't recognise it as japanese until you said, and even then i have trouble reading it.

It looks like you've written "hi-yo-u-?"... that last character is completely unintelligible, but i'm assuming it's meant to be a "to".

maybe it's just the font, but yeah, it doesn't really look like japanese to me :P

overall i really like the logo tho, although your quad-colour version appears to have 5 colors (blue, yellow, green and 2 pinks).

I like the top left one in the bottom set - particularly the way the headphones are incorporated hanging off the text - nice touch :¬)

if black counts as a color, it is still five colors... ;)

The word: hyoushi

The Katakana: ヒョイシ

Where I got the font: http://www.orange.ne.jp/~den7/index.html

Which font it is: Fancy Balloons

Why I used Katakana: I was under the impression that proper nound and names, like that of a company, should be written in Katakana. Perhaps this is wrong, and I'll remedy the situation if that's the case.

Quad color refers to CMYK.

Went the Japanese route for a minute, but in the end my personal choice in graphic design made me go for the more "urban" style, more American:

Here's the letterhead, businesscard design and envelope. Obviously, the logo can be seen on the pieces.
