any p4 with a kick *** graphics card. geforce 4 256mb. 1gb of RAM. Anything that boosts your visual. A nice large monitor. I am not a fan of flat screens even though I have one.

Mmm P4's http://userpages.umbc.edu/~tmccau1/images/smilies/sick.gif
*cough*
actually the hyperthreading is fairly impressive. If to go P4 then go 3.06 ghz with HT.
A GeForce FX would be nice if you had the dough ;)

Just about every leading graphic/design software is already available for Mac: Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, Freehand, Fireworks, Dreamweaver... is there anything else? Unless you are talking about games, what software will you be missing under Mac?

"leading"? Well yeah who cares about leading software ;) its those little things which have no functional purpose that you can find scattered all over the place on the web that make PCs so much fun!
btw the new macs came out, faster and cheaper (as are the displays) for you mac people.

Well your employer might... I don't think you could get a great design or freelancer job if you aren't well-versed in Photoshop, for example. Especially since the original question was for a "cpu to use it in graphic (web and printing)."
its those little things which have no functional purpose that you can find scattered all over the place on the web that make PCs so much fun!
Can you give me an example?
Plus, I heard about the recent price drops - $1999 for a Cinema Display! I'm saving my pennies now...

Well theres a lot, I didnt have anything in particular, but in comparing user bases, its obvious that PC (windows) software will be more abundant and prevalent than mac.
Some (flash alone related) examples:
Flash Toolset (http://www.flashtoolset.com/FTS/features.html)
Optimaze (http://www.file-size.com)
and
Swish (http://www.swishzone.com)

Good point. I didn't know any of this as I don't use Swift. Neither has any of the jobs/gigs (http://jobsearch.monster.com/jobsearch.asp?q=SWIFT+V3&lid=&fn=&sort=rv&vw=b&cy=US&re=14&brd=1%2C1862%2C1863) I've ever had or applied for required/preferred it. As far as MS Office - it's available now. Who cares if it wasn't available before? Doesn't this really say that more and more software are catering to the Mac platform if anything?
As far as Visual Studio/ASP, etc, I do think it's more advantagious to program/develop on a PC. You can get a low-end PC and still work efficiently and comfortably.

It depends on your dev style. I do alot of 3d and have come to love my pc because of the availablity of software. We all know that pcs dominate the market and wont change in our lifetimes. Also I do ASP so that is native to pc. If you ask me mac has not goten rid of their suck factor yet but I do test on them since they are out there. That is why they make everything so cutesy to try to stay abreast in the market.

I am not a Mac fan, but man that 36" plasma flat panel monitor is something else... You can hang it on the wall if you want...
I wouldn't want to do 3d on a Mac, but then again, I don't like doing 3d on my old Windows machine.
That said, Macs are the minority, thanks only to MS, so I went the Windows route, 'cause I need to conform to the most used...
I think for a lot of things, Macs are a superior product. If money was no object, an outrageous Mac system I would have...

iLife = iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, and iDvd.
It is free, except for iDvd... that's really what you're paying for when you buy iLife. But it's only $49, which is really good for software.
And you are right - you can find PC counterparts for these applications, but they really aren't as intuitive or well designed. Take iTunes for example. Sure you can download Winamp for free and play your music just like everyone else, but it is missing a lot of the usability and organization features that I love about iTunes. In addition, Mac applications work seamlessly with hardware - I wish I could say the same about PC, but after downloading so many drivers/security patches and countless trips to Fry's, I really can't.
It depends on your dev style. I do alot of 3d and have come to love my pc because of the availablity of software. We all know that pcs dominate the market and wont change in our lifetimes. Good argument in terms of 3D. Now I'm not saying that Macs are the perfect all-in-one machine and you should all throw out your PCs. I'm just saying the PCs are NOT your perfect all-in-one machines and that the Mac is superior to the PC in SOME areas.
But Mac doesn't stay afloat because they happen to come in a more attractive package than beige. If this was such a bad idea, than why did the PC world follow suite (as always) by paying more attention to case design and even to the point of forming geek bragging rights groups (http://www.pimpedoutcases.net/). Mac external designs are functional. Take the iMac for example. It's the entire system crammed into one piece (with the exception of the mouse and keyboard ofcourse). The chrome bar holding the flat-panel doubles as a handle. This is good stuff for nomads like myself! The G4 towers - more handles and curves for ergonomic function as well as a "trap door" for easy access to the innards. Ok, so they threw a little color into the mix. It's really not a big deal - I know that's not why I would purchase a Mac.
Again, I'm not saying it's the perfect machine. I already said if you were a huge gamer, the Mac is definitely not for you.
If money was no object, an outrageous Mac system I would have...
Excellent argument rev (even if you weren't really debating with us here). Steve Jobs does like to shake the change from my pockets!

Ehhhemm... After clearing my throat.. Lemme begin the ever lasting trial of PC vs MAC...
Why? Cause I have had both of them.. And where am I today?
PC : WOnderful condition..
MAC : Smashed to heavanly pieces...
First off... The Mac Colors supposably reigned first? Not! Alienware and other companies have been using colors before all this imac bullcrap and the stuff before it. Now.. The clear design with it.. Yeah.. But personally.. I don't like my computer having pastel tones... :) Just kidding btw.. I actually like the MAc colors.. And correct me if I might be wrong about the Aleinware thing... Cause I still remember having old PC Gamers with them in.
As for me wanting a brand new MAC? Well.. Would it really be worth the exorborant amount of extra money it would cost?! I just upgraded my PC to a Pent 4 1.7 ghz with 512 mb of RAM and a new Radeon 9000 128 meg vid card... for.. $400 for the parts..
I'd like to see a Macintosh do that ;) But then again.. if yuou allowed secondary components in a Macintosh it too would have problems with hardware as well.. When you think about the PC world and what goes in alot of computers.. It's a royal pain to think about.. All the types of vid cards from different companies.. You can have intel or amd or other motherboards and don't even go into the cd-roms or memory chips... Of course you are going to have hardware problems.. But at least I know that if a part got destroyed or needed replaced.. I'd have a million things to choose from.
Now... I'm not going to totally MAC Bash... WHy? Cause I actually don't midn the system in all truths.. It is a well rounded system for those of us out there who does not ant to bother with components and just wants a computer to do things on and that's it.. Actually it's the perfect family computer. I'll admit that.. For what a family would do.. It's perfect for that..
But.. For the gamers/programmers/designers (yes I said designers...) stick with the pc... Ohh And the budget sensitive.. Which classifies most of us probably...
Why designers though... Hmm Well.. What is design centering around alot lately? 3D and Internet... And which system reigns in both of these courts? PC
If I had enough money to buy a top of the line Mac.. Would I? No.. I'd buy a top of the line PC, 2 monitors and take the rest of the money and buy myself a brand new computer desk and computer chair. Then maybe some extra programs to run on it... But.. If I had some leftover money... I'd buy a mac to toy around with.
Blah blah blah... Yadda yadda yadda.. I don't hate Macs.. Please don't think that... But in a world where money is tight and options are wanted... PC's just work out.

Macs aren't just colorful and "pretty." As I said previously - the designs are more about function. They don't just have nicely dremelled windows on the side of the tower with a colorful LED inside to show the fan rotating, spray-painted in varying colors, ala Alienware. It's ergonomically designed. It's something even hard-core anti-Mac-ers (http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=MzUx) can appreciate.
I know this - you can build a PC from scratch for $400. But how long will it be until you have to replace that - especially since Windows requires more and more power with each upgrade. This is how Microsoft and Intel rub eachother's back - perpetual upgrade = huge sums of money for both companies. Are you thinking total cost of ownership there? How much tech support, replacement parts will you be needing in, oh, the next 3 years?
And I don't even have to say it as you already have: there are millions of PC part/accessory companies out there but the only presents more conflict issues. How is this a plus argument for the PC? Why would Apple take this route as it clearly isn't cost-effective in the long run for consumers? Yes you'd have millions to choose from, but how many of the millions will actually work with what you've got (and you have to think compatibility with just about every single part here).
Why designers though... Hmm Well.. What is design centering around alot lately? 3D and Internet... And which system reigns in both of these courts? PC
Last time I checked, designing isn't all about 3D. 3D rendering is only a fraction of the design realm. And by internet do you mean surfing the internet or designing for the internet. Let's see... yup, IE, Netscape, Mozilla, Opera, and the new Safari all work on the Mac - surfing the net, no problem. If you must mean designing, then you must mean Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, etc... Last time I checked, those work fantastically on the Mac (minus random BSOD temper tantrums (http://www.saunalahti.fi/~jylppy69/windows_rg.swf). Lastly, asp isn't the only option... what about PHP, CGI, Perl? What about OSX's fusion with Unix? Windows-users aren't the only ones switching...

my main work in printing so i think it's good for this operation but in others like ( web design, develop.........) all things about web i think PC is the TOP for this.
the beautiful thing in MAC it's the system if your system crashed it
so simple to recreate it and go back to your work no reinstall for all software.... :beam: this is the beautiful in MAC and of course the speed.... but now i think PC has a lot of good speed.

Well.. Lemme put it this way about the millions of computer parts ren..
What kind of donuts do you like? Maybe Chocolate With Sprinkles.. or Creme Filled.. Suppose that your company only brought you in Glazed.. But you didn't like them... But that's all you can get because you don't wnat to go buy your own... So you are forced to deal with them the way they are.. But.. Another company comes and takes your order for what you want.. This way you can get exactly what you are looking for, even though it might cause the delivery guy some trouble remembering all the different types. Sometimes the order gets screwed up.. but in the end.. It all works out...
I have a computer downstairs running Windows 98, AMD K-6 233 mhz.. And it runs everything perfectly fine... I still use this when using Flash MX and Borland's C++. I've had that computer for 6-8 years now (forget the actual date... But it's old)... I've enver needed a replacement part and it's never crashed on me. I don't think I've ever called a tech support line in my lifetime..
Now.. There are updates out there for me to put Window's XP on the computer.. BUT.. They aren't forcing them down my throat. Of course for the Window's 95 users will have problems but that's an extremely outdated system.. It's the same reason that some software won't run on the old Macintosh's.. Everything evolves...
Now.. As for the new look of Macs.. Yeah.. I told you I liked the look.. It's not for me.. But I can see it's functionability..
I used to get Mac Addicts all the time.. And they used to do comparison's amongst the newest PC's and the newest Mac's.. I still have a bunch of issues down in the basement as well. Thus I know what the Mac's are like when compared to the PC's..
Good Debate though... I don't think it really matters..
Take Care

That donut analogy makes no sense to me!
As for your old PC: let me first make a statement - yes it is possible for a PC running Windows to be stable.. IF you install a minimal amount of software on it, no Microsoft competitive software, and never upgrade your hardware. One of the great things about PCs is that you have an endless selection of companies pumping out hardware for your machine, making upgrading/installing, in theory, very flexible for the PC. You say you never needed a replacement part for your old PC... have you ever cracked it open? What software do you have running on there? Is this your main computer? Are you saying in the 6-8 years you've had it, you've never had a BSoD and/or never had to reformat?
Your donut analogy makes more sense if you just say some people like chocolate donuts and some people like glazed. Get whatever donut you like.

If you are not worried about the costs, get the more recent Intel P4 variations with faster bus speeds (on the motherboard) and improved cache and technology such as hyperthreading. The older P4s were quite bad and were outperformed easily by Athlon XPs.
So, get the newer P4s if cost is no issue =)

For the most part you have AMD giving you the most for your money. I have an AMD in my box now (1.4 GHZ), and it works great. No complaints or problems and plenty of speed.
The newest intel (I believe its still the newest - no wait, the newest is actually those slower processors they released ;)) is the 'fastest' processor on the market now and includes HT technology which allows a single processor to behave at times like a double processor because of its ability to handle multi-threading in whatever technical way it does - HT meaning "hyper-threading". A single HT enabled processor is not as fast as a dual processor system but is faster than a single processor system... and a dual HT system is faster than a dual non HT system. Go to www.tomshardware.com and search for hyper-threading and you should be able to find more on it.
AMDs newest processor ups the L2 cache but some thinks its not enough to compete with the newest intel chips.
...THOUGH, and I dont know where this can be found (probably toms hardware too) matched AMD and Intel processors do bounce back and forth in their performance in certain areas. From what I understand (or remember) I THINK AMD is better for gaming and Intel better for 3D apps... where photoshop falls in there, Im not sure. Though Photoshop is programmed to utilize threads so hyper-threading would undoubtedly come in use.
heh pretty much what kirupa said but more drawn out

1. Buy a dual 2.6ghz xeon, a radeon 9700 pro or the new gforce coming out what ever as long as its top of the line its the same ****, get a SCSI drive or a 120gb 8mb buffer HDD. dont go below 19 inches on your monitor(s). .26 is fine. u want a decent sound card for anything multimedia related. run windows XP professional.
as far as MAC or PC bull****, what ever. Same ****. the macs used to be better but what ever made them so great for design int he past is long gone. now that XP is about as reliable as mac OS it makes no difference. Unless you are into video production, then you want a mac just because they have better software. But basically anything you can do with a mac u can so the same with a PC. dont be ignorant, know your way around both platforms. they are just machines, ultimatly its up to you to do ****. the PC or MAC in of itself is a stupid piece of crap who, as we all know, cant read our minds lol. If you're on a budget stick to a PC. if you got cash to spend, buy a PC and a Mac( if you print or video production).

Fact: The Intel CPUs with the same Mhz Rate are just in decoding of dvds faster...

if nobody has mentioned it yet, the best computers are by Alienware. Except you'll have to get a mortgage to afford one.
Or starve yourself for a year. You know, either or.

I personally think Alien ware is a rip off just like every other "premade" CPU. You can buy your own parts and build your own computer for less than half the price and it will be just as good or better.

Alienware is a great company.. They build high quality computers and back their stuff up with great warrety's and everything.. And they are always in lead with developement with the latest processor..
AMD vs Intel.. Well.. Intel has the lead in 3d marketting.. And that includes games... But AMD's price and functionability through the windows environment allows it to show it's greatness as well.. I'd highly suggest that if you have the money.. Stick with Intel.. But if you don't have the extra cash.. an AMD is still great...
Me personally.. I have a Pent 4 1.7 ghz.. With Radeon 9700.. And I might add.. I think photoshop opens in 2 seconds with all the plugins I have.... :)

I think you guys don't have a clue, what you are talking about.
Intel should be faster than AMD in 3D ? No way....
I was for dinner at someone who works for intel and he also said, that AMD has a better performance....
Mhz is not everything........................................ ...................

I wasn't talking dinkling mhz readings..
I'm tlaking about FPS benchmarks on the latest and greatest new games.. Tested on AMD with Radeon 9700 and Intel with Radeon 9700.. And well.. The fps benchmarks were slightly higher in the intel.. *looking for mag right now*

Intel has the lead in 3d marketting
But I don't know someone who would pay a lot of more money to get just a little bit more speed...

I am in the 3d business and I have both a AMD station and a Intel (plus a kick *** p4 laptop). Truthfully I cannot tell the difference. It is kinda like placebo.....it is all in your head. And for your friend who works at intel and said that AMD performance is better is a stinkin liar (for lack of better words) I s he like the janitor at Intel. As it stands Intels performance kicks the bleep out of AMD. I was at a trade show and went to both booths and Intels was killing them in stats. The only thing I think is that AMD is cheaper, so it is better bang for the buck. BUt when it comes down to it being in a cpu the difference is un-noticeable. At least to me. It just depends on your style and what you are comfortable with

Alienware is rediculously good.
Not only do they have awesome warranty's and plans and whatever, they set VERY VERY VERY high benchmarks. Your computer <i>will</i> be perfect.
one sec, explorer is crashing. gayass old computer.
*wants to switch to the other one.... but someone's using it.*

add on a year of tech support, 24/7.
200 hours of quality control. that's just to make sure it runs.

Why isnt anyone mentioning XEON processeors. you can get a Dual 2.6ghz XEON with mobo for a decent price. add a gig of DDR RAM and a 9700 pro and you have a workstation decent enuff for the film industry. tho, Intel chips are overpriced IMO. i wanna try the HT chips.

Xeons are just mad expensive..if you have the bank go for it..they're worth it...

so now....
what is the final result... AMD... Intel.... Xeons.
i think i'll buy Intel with HT technology... :P

to be perfectly honest...
if you have the cash, the Xeons are definately where its at, processing power in those things are crazy...if you really have the cash have dual Xeons....
But for most normal people an AMD, or P4 is perfectly fine, AMD has a loyal following, and will die for their chips, but having tried both, I gotta say, I can't tell the difference between the two.
If you are going into design though, rock the G4...
But, whatever you do, DO NOT buy a Celeron...it may appear to have speed, but its lacking in the processing power...you'll have issues with it...

BTW XEONS are made by Intel. but actually u can get a dual Xeon set up for about as much as dual G4's.
from:
Xeon 2.4GHz 533MHz FSB Socket 603 Retail Pack $594.96
thats not bad for the most badass CPU u can buy. dual figure $1200. $400 for the Mobo and $300 for the ram thats $1900 for a kick *** set up. it would be $2200 if you added the Radeon 9700 Pro.
altho if you want the best XEON....its gonna be real pricy:
Intel Xeon 2.8GHz 512K Cache INT-mPGA Processor $1116.00

then you gotta ad the case, cooling, HD, CDROM/DVD/CDRW or whatever input device you want...unless you have an old machine you are gonna salvage for parts...

The Problem about Dual Processoring is, that it is not really good supported jet...
AMD has also a Dual Processor. And guess what, its cheaper ;p
Alienware is quiet good, but you can get those cases everyware, and if you want, you can get a fancy window in the door. In Germany 8 out of 10 persons, who are building their PC theirself are having this case. Its really cool, but its a bit noise, because it is open everywhere ;p

its just a regular Antec Case...you can buy one with a window and LED fans for 60 bucks...
they just customize it with an alien sticker, and fan grille...and you can buy the fan grille and sticker....
dual processor computers are more stable then a one processor computer, Photoshop however, is a program that takes advantage of both processors, but most of the time the processors take even loads so it doesn't use as many resources...
duals are worth it...if you have cash...
