hi.
i've got a large video (48MB) that after 7% is loaded, it starts playback.
on a pc it takes 10 seconds before it will start to play and it plays all the way thru with no problem.
on a mac it takes 30 seconds before it will start to play and sometimes playback is choppy.
why does this happen? what are the differences with playback of video on a mc and pc? is there some way i can get around this?
thanks. fumeng.

what kind of hardware and interent connection differences exist between the mac and the PC?

as far as the testers have told me, they are testing on a standard cable modem line from their home on an ibook and a g4.
i have a 988mhz pc, pent III, dell pc on a standard cable modem from my home.

Could be a configuration setting in quicktime....poor vid card, lots of programs open while trying to run......there are a bunch of variables that could play in......I would field many users stats before addressing it.

what about frame rate? could that have anything to do with it? i set it at 30fps, same rate the video was captured at.

could be....I usually roll at 33..which is what the human eye sees at if I am not mistake....I have heard others use 45-66. But test it.

ok. thanks a lot for your help. i appreciate it.

the reason that the load times are different is because of the NOS protocol differences at the physical level (the network card/cable connection) different platforms means different buffering and throughput capabilities. so it really has nothing to do with the vid file at all.
As far as frame rate and persistence of vision questions, there is a bit of misinformation that I'd like to clear up=] human eyes start to 'lose track' of independent stills at about 12 fps. NTSC video (north american standard) is at 29.97 frames per second. ('30 drop frame' a frame is dropped every 10 seconds.) But the differences in load times have nothing to do with that. Nobody uses '45-66 fps' (in video at least, flash is another story) PAL and SECAM (european and asian standards) are at 24 and 25 fps.

what do you mean by throughput capabilities?
so i guess this means that trying out different frame rates won't help, huh? looks like i'm stuck with what i have. thanks for your help, though. i really appreciate it.

throughput /buffering...when stream data comes across a network, it first hits the network card in the computer. its job is to send the incoming data in and out of RAM to display..different platforms (mac vs pc) have different protocols (rules n such) as to how much can be taken in at once, and how long the buffer time is (time it 'holds' data before sending it through to RAM)
throughput simply means how much data (how fast) it can push through the card into the system.

cheers=] my pleasure! kinda funny to run across this cuz i'm currently cramming (or rather procrastinating...) for my networking class exam, and just got done my video class this term, so it was all fresh on the brain =]
