Cool site. I really like the way his outline keeps . . . outlining itself. Okay, that made no sense but hopefully you know what I'm talking about! :P

Anyway, one thing I noticed because I did something similar on a site I'm working on is that content clip that slides in whenever you hit a button . . . I think it would be nice if it slid back out instead of just disappearing when you hit the close button.

Just a thought though. Otherwise - good job! Brown ain't an easy color to work with fo sho'.

Thanks Lunatic, you always have valuable feedback. How would I make the menu slide back? The menus I have now are "ok". Right now I am using a :

on (press){
this.removeMovieClip("window");
}

Cheers!

I used Voetsoejba's easing script. I also had trouble getting it to ease back so I posted a thread about it (just a few days ago!). You can read it here (http://www.kirupaforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=53929&highlight=easing). If that is too much or too confusing just look for Voets' post in this thread (http://www.kirupaforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=44403&highlight=easing), I think it's post #4.

If you still have trouble I can show you my own fla but that is at home and right now I'm at work.

Good luck! :thumb:

Nice layout and design BUT (and this is where I make my CONSTRUCTIVE criticisms) this is what I suggest

It's a little small, and a bit boring(this sounds harsh but I'm not putting it down, it's still a good site). Make it BIGGER and put on a nice splash page.

You need some of his music playing in the background with a controller to choose between say 3-4 tracks.

(*TIP* Don't make the music really loud. Keep it in the background. You'll know where the balance is between too quiet and obnoxiously loud when you're testing it.)

The menu system is a little drab. It needs to be more expressive. The site should scream at you what the artist is about without you having to read a single word.

Some good examples of this are:
> www.thursday.net (http://www.thursday.net/) and
> www.eyeout.cjb.net (http://www.eyeout.cjb.net/) (my site inspired by Thursday's)

Overall though I think this is a pretty good site that can only improve. If you take others' advice you should be on to a winner.

Flash, the site you see there is basically in the "mock" stages. I will add music, photos, etc. Still not sure what I should do with the menus.

Luna, I will go visit that post , thanks.

It still wouldn't make me interested enough to want to stay for long. A good website makes you want to learn more about the person/artist/band/company. Yesterday I spent an hour on a pharmaceuticals flash site just because it was so well designed.

It was well laid out, had a nicely animated menu and basically the whole thing just worked. The thing about your site is it just doesn't gel together quite perfectly.

Well, feel free to help out :) I can send you the fla via email or messenger.

I don't agree 100%. There are definitely cool sites out there that you want to poke at just because of the design and such. BUT there will also be a faction that poke at the site because they are fans of the subject. People who are interested in the musician will want to see pics, hear tunes, dig to find out when and where they are playing next, read all the news they can get their hands on, etc.

So those of us who aren't flash geniuses still have some small hope of having our sites looked at simply because of the subject matter!

Nice feedback Lunatic. Besides, have you seen Flash Gordons website? It's not very desirable in my opinion. :P

P.s. the post for "easing" is brilliant. Just have not gotten the guts to tackle it yet... I'd really like to learn how to implement easing into my movie clips. Maybe there is a step by step somewhere..

lunatic
April 20th, 2004, 12:09 PM
:)

I would just try messing around with Voetsjoeba's script on a new fla. Make a small movie clip and play with it before you try to entwine it into your own project. It's brilliant in its simplicity and very useful, especially the line that says "when the movie clip gets within a couple of pixels of the destination just stop" because with some of the other easing scripts I've seen it never REALLy reaches its destination - just keeps dividing the distance by half. With V's script you can add other functions/actions like "when the MC gets within 5 pixels of its destination launch this other animation" or something like that. Very useful. :thumb:

By the way, no, I haven't seen Flash Gordon's website. But it doesnt' matter - we all have to start somewhere. You should see the few websites I've made! :P As long as we have aspirations to learn more and do better we'll all get there.

Sorry if it seemed like i'm just putting your site down and criticising it. Send me that fla at paddyrwduke@yahoo.co.uk and i'll have a go at some changes. BTW i'm pretty new to flash and my intent doesn't always end up as my design so if my site looks like it was drawn by a psychotic 2 yr old it's just because I was aiming for a dark scrawled look.

Your site is much cleaner and I'll try to implement some new menu styles.

I don't mean to offend, just to help.:thumb:

Thanx dude. What is a .rar file?

SteadyScene
April 20th, 2004, 02:20 PM
Serious? You need winrar to open. Go to download.com and search for winrar. Its a compression utility like Winzip

April 20th, 2004, 04:44 PM

lunatic
April 20th, 2004, 04:50 PM
In the version of winrar that I have you can choose to save it as a zip. The compression is usually not as good but this is useful for people that don't have winzip.

Hey all, I made some MORE changes to the site. They are for the better. However, I may need some assistance. As you can see as the site loads the middle part is just white. I want to scoot that picture over from the left and have a mouse over effect. As you can see there is a mouse over effect but its just a basic motion tween. What I'd like to do is something similiar to what MTV did a few years ago. They had a mosue over effect that, when moused over, little boxes would fade away with the mouse, revealing a photo underneath. You with me?

Who wants to help? :) <hi Luna!>

I could use help with the easing on the animations as well :) <ahem>

mjULTRA
April 22nd, 2004, 12:51 PM
well, im not too well versed in actionscript, but as far as motion tweens, its real easy to ease... i think the main outline animation could benefit from this type of 'eased' motion tween...

One good way of getting a smooth transition is to set up a motion tween from start to finish, over the course of thirty frames. make sure that ease is set to '0'. Then, select frame fifteen, (or whatever the middle frame is) and press F5 to insert a new keyframe. Set the frame 15 ease slider to 100/Out, and then set the frame 1 ease slider to -100/In... That should make your animation lurch forward, and gain speed, until it reaches the middle point, and then slow down to a stop, when it reaches the end.. The best way to get the hang of this is trial and error...

i think your text scrollers can benefit from a smooth scrolling tutorial, or something like that, as they are kind of jumpy...

also, i think the outlined shape that the text appears on, might look better with a gradient drop shadow, as opposed to the cut out solid drop that it has now...

Also, since im pointing out things that i would change, if it were my design, i would leave the audio section out of the category group, and just have an audio player load some music on the left, over the picture of the guy... he is a musician, right??

SteadyScene
April 22nd, 2004, 12:57 PM
Yes, I will work on the easing. Going to leave everything as it is. The audio section will be for downloadable content. Adding a mp3 player now but I need to post a question about loading an external swf into a empty movie clip holder.

Cheers!

SteadyScene

Ok I added some easing. Also implemented "Rock Player" to the site.

mjULTRA
April 22nd, 2004, 02:06 PM
nice.. i like the easing, and i like the mousover effect on the outline, where it shoots crap out... pretty cool...

the mp3 player is nice, see if you can get it to stream, which is, playing the file when it is halfway loaded, rather than wainting for the entire thing to load, before playing..

also, i think the player should be in the image on the left, and not in the white space..

but ultimately, its your call...

keep up the good work; this project is coming along nicely....

EDIT: clicking the 'Launch Rock Player' Multiple times, makes the same track play many times over.... you should make it load automatically, on page load, and ditch the Launch Rock Player button altogether...

SteadyScene
April 22nd, 2004, 04:23 PM
well, that would be nice, however I did not create the mp3 player. One of the moderators released it for anyone to use. Not sure how to make is streaming, or how to get it to start auto.

Maybe I need another out of the box solution?

You Steady Scene! I posted my version of the site here (http://www.freewebs.com/showcasesite/index.html).
Check it out.
I couldn't work with your site so I totally overhauled it and started from scratch. You don't have to use all of this site, just thought I'd give you some ideas.

Only the bio button works in this version, i figured you could do the rest yourself.
The content is a seperate swf file that loads in. the code is all in the fla if you want it.

did you change your site?

SteadyScene
April 23rd, 2004, 03:46 PM
Yes

In fact, I have provided a few revisions: www.steadyscene.com/rockcoreybrown/revisions/revisions.html

prstudio
April 23rd, 2004, 03:58 PM
i would make the face on the left stand out more - like take the red filter off -

also the background seems to white and open - and the image of him on the upper left, while cool, has a jagged back to it and seems kind of detached - as does the menu

i would work on bringing it more together to make a seamless experience...and adding graphical flourishes here and there...tighten it up - it has good potential -

also maybe make the buttons on the nav a bit sleeker and use a different font?

I think the outline idea is pretty neat - how it kinda ...ummm...outlines itself. lol lunatic.

not wanting to come down on ya, but that's what i saw :)

*** EDIT - that's what I saw based off of the first version - the revisions page is taking forever and a day to load...

Graphical flourishes - things that tie together the different elements of your site...

with the setup you have so far - you need something to help draw together the sidebars, and top and bottom. Let colors flow into each other - curves or lines - to make it feel more solid and loose - instead of so separated and stiff.

also I'm still not seeing your revisions - it seems you made them some sort of flash movie?

Might want to try posting screenshots instead of one movie - I was on a fat pipeline at work and it took forever and now I'm at home on a nice broad connection and well its still not loading after 3 minutes.

SteadyScene, I just thought I'd visit the Rock Corey Brown site and see what it turned out like.
I like it. It's a major improvement on the original design.
The only thing I could say is that the music files take too long to load.
Are they very high quality? If so you should try reducing the quality of them before publishing the site. I had the same problem with the COTE site and setting the quality to 50% didn't make a huge difference but it dramatically reduced the load time. Eventually I took them off cos they weren't our songs and I didn't want any copyright infringements.
Other than that, I say nice site and good job.

P.S. I really like the track called Sapporo

SteadyScene

thanks for your feedback, the site is still undergoing some improvments. Audio mp3 will not be implemented, it will be a voice over mp3 and thats it.

Thanks for the compliments on Sapporo. One of the songs I wrote. :)

ok I made some more changes however, my client now wants me to add a movie that loads two images...
Here are his words:

"Can you have the site open synousmous with a movie...
The two headshot pictures- one looking straight ahead-the other profile image
that you were using for the back drop in the updated site. These are the two pictures I am refering to. When rockcorey.com is entered I want to these these two pictures to show up move apart/faded or whatever effect.. Then immediately go to the Home page which is selection number #3 with the graphitti and the suit."

What is the best way to accomplish this?
