Its here, the new -next generation video cards by nvidia. Based on the codenamed NV40 chips arrive the Geforce 6800, comes in two flavours 6800 and 6800 Ultra.
April 14, 2004 - Today NVIDIA announces the GeForce 6800 and 6800 Ultra. These two new cards, based on the architecture previously referred to as "NV40," mark the arrival of the next generation of graphics cards. I've taken a GeForce 6800 Ultra through our full set of benchmarks, but before we get to those performance numbers I want to go over the new features of this brand-new GPU...read more of the preview here (http://gear.ign.com/articles/506/506325p1.html)

Wow - it really outperforms the 9800XT by quite a bit :) With all that bandwidth and power, I am not certain my current CPU/RAM and MB's FSB can handle all that data.
It's been a while since nVidia claimed the top spot in graphics card performance. Good to see that.
Cheers!

mucho impressive - I'm just wondering why it isn't running Open GL 2.0 ??? Its got DX 9 but only 1.5 opengl?

interesting, might be more a feature for quadro rather than the 6800.

I heard ATI is coming out with an NV40 killer. As of now they only have details, but they claim it will outperform Nvidia's new power monster with its 16 pipeline card.

My only minor issue with this card is that it takes up an extra PCI slot next to the AGP slot. It's no big deal, but I kind of like having some extra space inside the comp :)

they did it on purpose so that it wouldn't overheat as much. plus, with the amount of heat those video cards produce you wouldn't want to destroy the adjacent card with its extreme temperatures over a period of time.

The ATI next gen card is on the way. I'm going to wait to pass judgement on which one wins. In the meanwhile, I'll pinch pennies and save so I can buy the best card :D

I'm probably going to buy a 9800XT at a lower price one ATI's new card comes out :)
Good point thor!

Here is another really cool set of screenshots that talk about the pixel shader powers of the 6800: http://discuss.futuremark.com/forum/showflat.pl?Board=techdisplayadapters&Number=3702351

nice link kirupa, :)
Really it dosent matter at this time which one is better, its refreshing to see nvidia finally give in and give it all their got. Not only will this encourage Ati and other video cards makers alike to keep up (or take over) it has also pushed the technology in a huge way which in turn will improve games visuals and game play. So in the end it's the users (consumers) who actually win in the end, because without us (consumers) both nvidia and ati would be out of business.

Nvidia were originally releasing the card out as a PCI Express card, but thought other-wise since it was a new technology which has not been tested much on there part and they felt that the old and reliable AGP slot will serve them right, other cards in the series i believe will be released in PCI express (maybe even a second release of the 6800 or maybe the new Quadro cards).
as for farcry, i m playing the demo with my geforce fx5900 , everything on very high quality, it's purrrtty...

pretty good choice kirupa :) But if you have enough dough the x800/xt is extremely good. Its the newest one out from ati and is even more faster than the new nvidia. wheww :hr:

Tests are speculative i would say, lets just see when it does get released in early may. But once again, it has driven the war between Nvidia and ATI. For extensive information on the Geforce 6800 card, please have a look here: http://www.guru3d.com/article/Videocards/128/1/ with also official Nvidia performance results on page 8.
