Kirupa, I'm glad to see that you've taken the initiative to improve an otherwise great graphic design/ flash forum. <insert smily here>
It'll definitely take a few days to get used to but I'm sure the change will be well worth the adjustment.
Thanks,

I got up early (4 am), after coffee and Kirupa I spent the whole day out in the bright sun and some monsterous winds up on a roof :cons: and came home with the **killer headache**

In an attempt to bring some order to all of the updates, if any of you have any thing with the forums that you think needs to be done, post them here! Even if you have mentioned something to me in another thread, please post your request here :)
This way, I will not have to shuffle between a ton of threads for finding out what needs to be updated next.

The font used for the names are big, There is a lot of space wasted making the whole place look crowded, also making the page a lot bigger by having the names bigger and the msgs under them.

[AS] tags and the date and time of each post in threads (the user registration date is there, but not the day or time of their replies).
By the way, the use of the [AS] tags was great. How'd you do that? You made an actionscript-aware forum.
Also that list of who was currently in the currrent forum was nice.

Vulcan! http://www.kirupaforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=52315 :ninja:
I actually find these forums to be much faster than what they had been previously. McG, I tried using the vertical template a few hours ago, but it looked strange. I'll modify the vertical postbit_legacy file later today and make it vertical again.
AS tags are, alas, no longer in existence. The company that made the AS highlighter is gone or something. The older version doesn't seem to work with vB3.
If I find QuickEdit again, I'll go ahead install it. It should be available soon if it isn't already though!
To send someone an e-mail or PM, you have to click on their names. If that isn't good enough though, I guess I can always add some buttons below their posts to make that process easier.
Cheers!

I know it has been mentioned, but might get lost,
the dating of the individual posts is fairly important meThinks, to staying oriented in a conversation.
but on the button issue - pls leave that alone as the drop-down from the userName accomplishes that ... fewer buttons == better view IMO
and on the virtues of vert. vs horiz. layout ... my eye keeps getting drawn up from the text I'm trying to read and it's making me cross-eyed .. much cleaner and easier to read with the posters' info off in a left-hand column - I can easily glance over if I need to.

i like some aspects, but honestly, it's confusing. You have too many layers, Kirupa. Part of it could be the coloring as wlel - the difference between the user information portion of a post and the post portion of the post is really subtle.
A stark difference would help that.
kirupa
April 2nd, 2004, 09:06 PM

Haha, Thanks. That's just one of those crazy things that seems to bug me in every forum that I've ever visited (even my own! I never figured out how to fix it in Invision).
I'm a perfectionist. The littlest things bug me ;). Heck, I even edited this post about 5 times until I got it right!

Kirupa can we have a menu or something of the smilies on quick reply?
that'd be great, i am sure not all the members know the asigned keys to different smilies...just an idea.

Have you attempted to see the threads where the code for the new footer had been changed? :vamp:

Btw, have any of you been receiving a similar error to the following when trying to post new threads?
Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 8388608 bytes exhausted at (null):0 (tried to allocate 129 bytes) in /home/virtual/site284/fst/var/www/html/forums/includes/functions_search.php on line 220

ps: i havent used my confused smilie for a while. lol :)

April 4th, 2004, 12:33 AM
Ok - that error is caused by a cache limit enabled in PHP for my server. Disabling the Similar Threads feature (which is very CPU intensive while posting) will prevent this problem from occuring in the future. The worse part is that, I think, if a user views a thread and that error occurs, that thread may go "missing."
Yeah - server errors are never good :) Luckily, they shouldn't happen again.
Soulty - they aren't users, they actually are Google spiders. This version of the forums finds out the IPs of popular web-search spiders and labels them. There are usually several of the spiders indexing content on the forums at the same time! It's nothing to be alarmed about hehe.

Kirupa i got the footer sorted out, thanks :)
Names are really too big, seriously!!
i am on 800X600 resolution, it just looks so unprofessional.
Suggests trying verdana font..9pts and bold..maybe a different color for mods and yourself.
Also other information buttons like (send a pm, email, website)the buttons below are missing.

April 4th, 2004, 01:44 AM
I don't know - I think the font sizes for the names are cool this way. The PM and such can be found by clicking on a user's name (yeah - the really huge names) on the left :)

for some reason, DST was not detected when I logged in this morning.
I have since changed the option to always on, so no biggee, I just wanted you to know about this one Kirupa.
I think my V3 is a bit buggy :)
kirupa
April 4th, 2004, 04:00 PM
Wow - I completely forgot that DST takes place today. I've been running around and going to classes at the wrong times haha.
It must be your version of vb3 hehe. The forums recognized the proper time for me.

*click* the user name and there's (should be) a drop-down menu with all that stuff
..[but it does run behind the flash footer, but not the text]...

yea....thats was the bug with quick edit radiobutton in last design, thanks RR :)

The menus going behind the flash footer is an annoyance reland. I prefer static graphic footers - they are less CPU intensive also, but I am not sure that urging everyone to use a non-flash/plug-in based footer would end well :)

April 4th, 2004, 04:50 PM
um...just wondering if my footer is cpu intensive....
it works ok here.
RelandR
April 4th, 2004, 04:53 PM
not complaining - just saying ...
but since it is mentioned, perhaps a spacer to offset them more to center would be an easy fix (?) .. it doesn't seem to under-run text in the header tho
kirupa
April 4th, 2004, 04:53 PM
A page full of footers is always more CPU intensive than a page for of static JPEGs or GIFs. But no, I'm not refering to your footer or anybody's footer specifically :cons:
Reland: an offset would be a good solution. I think Lou is using an image, so clicking Thread Tools would not have any effect.

well, especially those with transparent mcs moving over other transparent mcs are very cpu intensive... wait let me think who has a footer like that ;)

Wohoo!! The annoying spacing issue that was dividing the IE and Moz/Firefox factions seems to have been fixed. On your left, you will notice that there is no extraneous space for the location, posts, and name/avatar tables :)

Mr. Kirupa,
Just to let you know, the quick reply and main reply boxes get really thick/messed up borders in Firefox. Just a little hitch. See image. And the rollover hints are a little funky, after you move your mose away the hint is still there, and you have to click to see another rollover hint and to make the old one go away.

Hey sushi!
I just tested it out in firefox using your style, and I am not having any problems with random/broken corners. Is anyone else who is using firefox having similar issues?
Cheers!
