Hey guys,
After a successful year of web back end development with a couple dozen clients, I'm in need of an original logo for my personal company WoodsTek. Being an IT consultant for a major telephony company, I've stayed busy developing the backend coding for their intranet for a couple years. I'm trying to move my company onto their referal list to cut out the middle man, (headhunter) To do this, I've been advised to set up a more professional look, and move away from word of mouth clientel.
Seeing as I have 4 sites in the process of design, basic static site with the 5 page basics, and NOT being a designer, although by mid year I hope to be able to stop outsourcing this work and do it within my own company, I am asking for an ORIGINAL logo for WoodsTek with the trademark slogan, "Growing IT Solutions".
Basically, I'm looking to give someone incentive for the design as well as a small cash prize for their work. In any case, you'll be doing me a service as well as adding to your resume for a company that is legit and is increasing it's clientel by 4 monthly.

So the basics. I'm looking for an original logo for WoodsTek (preferrably a small tree grouping what have you, I'll leave it to your imagination). Your logo will appear in advertisements and will be endorsed on my completed site. The cash prize is a meager $25 but the experience will be a plus. I'll let you guys vote on the best and if another design is more suitable I will add an additional amout for that design. Animations of "Growing IT Solutions" will also receive a cash prize.

So I leave it to you to accept or decline. It helps build experince as well as a small amount to invest in a new design book or night out with the lady. Good luck and I hope this isn't stepping on any toes. If you are interested just reply. The final date is a week from now, Jan. 26.

Thank you and good luck.

~Marius

You're the designer... I'll leave it to you. Just think in terms of WoodsTek and Growing IT Solutions. Look forward to seeing what you come up with. Thanks for the interest.

Sounds Good!

So all you want is a logo?

Wats this animation stuff??

=)

Hi Dave. I'm hoping to add a site animation at some point whether by me or someone else, which basically implements the logo into an animation. For instance: a small sapling growing into a detailed tree. Basic symbolization of a small startup expanding into an oak if you will... key words being growth and stability through the animation imagery. I've seen a lot of skill here and am surprised at how it is done for sheer enjoyment. I figured why not throw out the idea and see if anything comes of it. Like earlier discussions, bill rates these days are lower but a design from a third party firm could run over a months profit and thats just low scale animations.

Basically, I'm looking to throw a few dollars to a few people who know how to do this type design work but aren't billing at 57 dollars an hour. Some of the stuff here beats what I've paid for and it's from people who enjoy what they do for free. I'm just giving an option to make a few dollars on a few hours work to people who might not otherwise have an in or the clientel to charge.

Whether animation or logo, I figure 3-4 people will be receiving a pay pal note for $25. Maybe one person receiving it all. Whose to say.

The main subject is the logo. If you would also like to do animation including the logo be my guest. It will be the best $50 I've spent in some time. And I'd rather give it to someone here than somewhere else.

But main focus: Logo
optional: logo used in the design.

It might be a better idea to wait until the logo is voted on and then next week do an animation. I'll leave it up to you guys.

Thanks again for your time.

OK sounds good!

Just wondering bout sumpin!

morse asked about particular colours, and you replied "up 2 you".
But you also mentioned someone is creating you a website right?

To have a proper Identity, it will be best to maintain the colours of your website, or the website being created. That way you are creating a corporate Identitiy to your company!!

Know what i mean?

=)

Don't worry about the website. I'm only interested in the logo. A couple of my buddies and myself are designing it at a later date.

Logo prize: $25

Animation prize making use of the logo: $25 (This will probably be next week's battle seeing as the logo has yet to be established.)

Good Luck 2 you...

I don't speak smilies but I assume you mean it isn't worth your time... I understand but to some it might be. Anyways, think of it as a battle with an actual prize. Have a good one.

And yes it is open to anyone.

I know what you mean, but this kind of thing is exactyly how I got gigs with Nike, and Eidos. I had entered a contest, someone saw my work, next thing I know, I am working on a small portion of their sites...

The exposure gained can be extremely useful to people who aren't exactly living in a Web Design Hotspot.

But then again, $25 wouldn't buy a lot of logo either. I couldn't spend more than about 20 minutes with that pay, and that wouldn't produce a very nice logo. However, that said, there are a lot of up and coming designers that could benefit from this opportunity.

The smilie looks clear to me :)
Anyway, it's not at all that it's not worth my time, because I'm not a designer, and if I tried to sell you a logo for $25, you'd probably :trout: me (I hope you get the smilie now)

Anyway, we've had this discussion before, no need to repeat :hangover:

I have no qualms and am not at all the sensitive type. It's how I started... I ofered to design a couple websites for nearly nothing to create a clientel reference, in that time by word of mouth I've gone on to have dozens more.

Some of these battles take a few days just to get props... At least this way you get a monetary value.

Let's make it $33.50 to cover the price of the Action Scripting book....

I was a Pastry Chef (I graduated from the California Culinary Academy's full Chef program with Honors, in 1994).

I have owned my own cafe (San Jose, CA), and worked in Hawaii for a year. I have had my own catering business, cake decorating business, and I have worked in several restaurants in San Franciscso.

I don't cook professionally anymore. I do, however, have friends over at least once a week for dinner, wine, a bowl, and good conver... Spam.

I also have some friends who don't have cooktops in their place (one lives on a boat), and they will bring over meat of some kind, which I cook...

There, my chef's resume in short...

I'll get in this with you..

But you only have to answer a quick question..

Out of all the logos and stuff...

Plain Picture (.jpg still frame)
Solid Animation (.gif animated frames)
Interactive Animation (.swf flash design)

Whichever one sounds more appealling I'll try my hand at it.

Later On

marius
January 20th, 2003, 06:10 PM
Focus on the logo image.
The animation is second in an .fla form. Of course I would want the png file as well for the image where I could implement in future designs and such.

Logo image $ Prize 33.50 US
Animation $ Price 33.50 US

So from $25 to $33.50 Hope that adds a little interest...

I recently viewed a thread that dealt to this one in similarity. It was at the turn of the year for a web hosting company. The guy had the animations sent directly to him and it seems never replied to who was the winner or how he payed the winner.

As I am new to the community, I insist on sending a paypal note for the amount to a moderator. And when the battle is done, winner chosen, the moderator can pass the winnings on. That way, everyone's word is kept and there aren't any ill feelings from previous contests...

Mods? Is this acceptable?

Also, c'mon people. A logo. Let;s get those creative juices flowing.

Alethos, I printed that out and it now hangs on my board. Simply classic. I'd love to see your real entry as well.

Soul,
I'm just going to say, that I commend you on helping to prove that there is a talented cast here in the Kirupa community.

I know the prize money isn't much, but if you win, it will be because you were deserving. GL2U!

Also, if Alethos and a few other DO in fact turn in an entry, we'll take the winner and base an animation on the logo for an additional cash prize.

Like I said, I'm no DESIGNER, (yet), but handle mostly intranet level backend scripting and static pages for third parties. Paper trail turned e trail or what have you.

Actually more exctied about seeing my future logo tomorrow than about the Super Bowl...

I don't see why this would be a problem to anyone, but if it is feel free to let me know. But seeing as it's 5:00 Central time, there's still 7 hours until the deadline...

Well I finally got to finishing it. My idea for your corporate identity.

Business card sample and stationery: The business card should optimally be printed with gold leaf where the circuitry is, but to save on costs, you could just do it orange and yellow as pictured. (Sorry about the name on the card, I did my best to guess at your last name. :P)
http://members.rogers.com/alethos/kirupa/woodstek_stationery.jpg

Logo: I hope it's fairly obvious what it represents, but in case it's unclear, the "tree" is a printed circuit board.
http://members.rogers.com/alethos/kirupa/woodstek_logofinal.jpg

Corp ID design is one of my fave things to do, so this battle was quite a treat (and the cash prize incentive helped too!).

Seeing as it is for my companies logo but given the nature of the battles, I will ask you guys an option:

Is it fair for me to pick the logo that I believe is better suited for my needs or would you rather I let everyone vote on it and award that person the cash award but have the option to choose the better suited as my logo?

Basically, would you rather me pick and pay or let everyone vote on the winner. And by doing so, forfeit the rights to the ONE I do pick even if it's different to the one chosen, although you still will get acknowledged as the designer... (This is a basic clause stating I didn't steal your work etc etc.)

So what do you guys think? Still an hour and a half until 12:00 AM

************************************************** ************************************************** ****
UPDATE
************************************************** ************************************************** ****

I'm not fond of editing text due to it's ability to be taken inaccurately. So I'm just going to edit the same message. After seriously analyzing the two options, I think that if I picked and paid for the logo I chose, it would ultimately go over a lot smoother.

I am going to wait until the the morning before making the selection. At which time I will ask you via email to send me a payment order, which I will basically draw up and have you fill in... (Necssary for the accountant.) No it will not be taxed in anyway if you're wondering. But I do have to have proof of ownership.

So I'm going to look through them again and let you know in the AM.

Thank you all for participating. t is all exceptional work and I really do appreciate all the hard work you guys have put into it.

***And know that this week, the battle will be an animation featuring the chosen logo using flash and any other tool you'd like... No holds bar!!!!

There definitely is a lot of talent here and I think that there will be several occasions in the future where I "outsource" design work to those that are truly skilled here at Kirupa.

I just want to say that the logos were by far more than I expected and it was a hard choice. Based solely on the look of a company that encompasses not just design but also hosting, hardware leasing and backend administration I have to say that alethos' entry is the winner.

I want to thank all those that entered once more. I really appreciate the interest and taking the time to show your creative flare.

Thanks again!!!

I think it is pretty neat!!
I also want to congradulate you for being the winner!!

alethos
January 27th, 2003, 02:34 PM
Thanks cdr.

The tree was made by first drawing simple lines in Flash to make the circuitry. Then I chose the circuitry, converted the lines to fills, changed the colour to dark grey, and expanded to make the grey/black part around the circuitry. Then I went in and manually filled in parts of the grey that I thought needed filling in (otherwise it would look like a tree in winter, with no foliage). Then I just added some text to it.

Next I ported it all to Photoshop where I added the rest of the text and colours.
