Hello everybody,

I have a question concerning the programming business. I have a customer and he asked me to write a program for him. He willl pay for the program. The program will consist of creating a form so the users can input the info, the info then will be store in a db and at the same time, the info will be sent (as a text file) the to him. Now there is a database involved. He also need to access the db to do some inventory (but no search function at this time). How do I charge him for all that? Will I manage the db and the code and charge him a maintenance fee? Or Do I just give him everything and let him manage it?

Thanks
Jacques

1) Create a contract.

2) Charge for the development of the solution. So the creation of the database, the interface to input to the database and the functionality for the data to be sent as a flat txt file.

3) If he wants post imp support of the database managment then build in a maintenance / support charge. If he doesn't want that then you can re-negociate a fee when he crawls back to you asking for help. (oh makesure that this is in the contract that and additional support is not covered in the contract)

i would submit a (SOW) Statement of Work, which clearly describes in detail (uses of techy words def. help) table names in your database and thier functionality. I wouldn't think that maintenance with something like this would be happening too much, but you could certainly include at the bottom of the SOW that maintenance fees are a flat fee of $50/hour. I would estimate the time that it will take to do this entire project, add atleast 3 hours to the original est. (This time will cover all of the intial changes that the customer might want changed) and i would charge atleast $50/hour for this project.

If you have any questions abotu a SOW i would be more than willing to let you have a look at one of my old ones, to give you a better idea of what i mean.
