Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the best 3D software is at the moment for applying a 3D finish to images, The price doesn't matter as much as the usability and professional finish.

Any suggestions will be greatly recieved

Lightwave 7.5 or 3ds max is pretty much industry standards.

Thanks,
I've had a lot of recommendations for Maya version 4.0, I'm going to look into this, has any one like alethos had any first hand experience they could share with me or any examples of finished projects for me to see the overall finish.
Cheers

Hi eilsoe,
Do you Know where can I see examples of finished 3dsmax projects and is there a screensave of 3dsmax's interface I can look at.

As for a screensave? Not for the next 4 hours. I have to get home before I can take a snapshot. Currently at "work"...

I would recommend trying out both Maya and 3DS before you buy either. I know Maya offers a Personal Learning Edition that you can have mailed to you free of charge. It comes with several basic tutorials that introduce you to some of Maya's most powerful features, and the Alias|Wavefront website has a community forum dedicated to Personal Edition users (where you can get support very conveniently). Discreet unfortunately does not offer a demo version of 3DS.

If you want to see Maya in action you can check out the free quicktime tutorials at Gnomon Online (http://www.gnomononline.com/title.html). I'm sure there are 3DS tutorials out there in video format that will allow you to see it's interface in action. Both are pretty streamlined, and the new 3DS (versions 4 and up) has changed their interface to more closely resemble Maya's modularity.

In the end, the only difference between the two is personal preference, I think. Amazing work can be done with both packages, so it's up to you to decide which you like more. Also consider the amount of support you will be able to get for the package you choose. There's is a buttload of stuff out there for 3DS, but not so much for Maya.

Good luck!

:)

If you noticed the little caption above my avatar, I m a lurker. I read tons of posts, but rarely reply unless I have something useful to say. :)

If somebody speaks my name, however, I feel I have to reply so as not to be rude. :+)

As for your tute, I look forward to it.

Oh yeah the quicktime tutorials at the Gnomon Workshop are really great resources. You can learn more watching those for 20 mins than you can reading 5 tutes in an 2 hours.

Man I was looking at Fry's (rev you should know about Fry's :)) and they didn’t have 3DS Max. All they had in the super-secure software vault was a bunch of Microsoft crap, Flash MX, Dreamweaver MX, and some Adobe products. I was VERY disappointed.

Anyway I got my 3DS from my Ultra rich friend. He goes and buys any software that I say is sweet, but he never even tries to figure out how to use it. He got so mad at 3DS cuz' he couldnt figure it out that he just said I could have it. (-:
