I'm pretty new to kirupa, but following on from my thread about flash drawing tools on the Art & Design forum, anyone wanna have a battle at designing cartoon characters in flash ? static or animated ?

well, as it's a battle, and i've seen the terms "original work" i'd say something of your own rather than a representation of some existing cartoon character...

Makaveli, just coz you don't do line art doesnt mean you can't enter, i mean, my fish & trout were quick deals, i tend not to get too technical n stuff and just go for simple designs which work through simplicity. in fact, entering is more important if you think you're no good, gets you doing stuff....

if no-one posts rules by end of tomorrow, i'll propose somethin...

If anything needs to be changed here, like another suggestion on a Theme, to change the size, added/removed participants, or to change the due date.

pleah. the whole point was that it would be using the drawing tools in flash only...

grrr.

the point being that give me (and Makaveli apparently) a pencil and paper and we suck, so scanning our own designs from paper into something like flash is pointless. but let me play with flash a while and i can come out with some interesting designs, re: the fishbowl robot, the trout, and the main character at http://meathook.net on the index page.

no scanning of previous work.... completely original design made in flash only.

Although is it OK if I draw on paper first then recreate in Flash? No scanning in, just a visual guideline sitting on the table next to me?

Oh, and even if we aren't scanning anything in, I think this still qualifies as line art...

err, yeah, that's part of the point.... using a scan, and tracing lines then filling them in is a cool method of getting your original concept into flash, but it's no fun ;-)

i'm not going to say it doesnt take any skill coz it does, and besides, i'd get trouted by kit...

I'm more than willing to confess though that there isn't much skill involved in drawing the way I do with a PC. The difficult bit (for me) is drawing the initial image by hand. Although most of the time it's a rough guide, not a complete picture. Once I've got that basic idea down on paper then I can scan it in and begin to build on it.

I've found that I just can't seem to get things like proportions right when I draw freehand with a mouse. Especially for things like poeple which I draw a lot. Maybe if I had a Wacom... :sure: That would be nice.

Oh, and guess what. I lied. Have a trout. :trout:

Well, I'm off work for the rest of this week, so I'm going to have to post my entry now.

After a lot of deliberation (alright, 5 minutes of panic, I confess), I decided to make a cutesy little monster, rather than a scary one. More like a Disney character than anything else I guess. I'm not the worlds' best cartoonist anyway, so this is quite plain and simple. Minimal shading, unlike the style of artwork I usually draw.
