little 3dsmax4 tut problem

i was using the wooden shelf tutorial in www.3dtotal.com (freestuff > tutorials). and on the first page there is a gif of editing the vertex of the bookshelf top.

i'm sort of having trouble with this because i can't seem to select the whole line of vertices (i thinkt ahts correct, each dot is one vertex right?). is there a way to select multiple vertices easily because i can only select onefor some reason? thx

alrite i fixed that, now i got another question on the same tutorial. lower down there is a picture of a half drawn doorknob (the one the guy drew with 'lines') i was wondering how he ended that without closing the spline. because it won't let me just draw half and stop, i have to reconnect it to the first point i drew then it'll let me. thx
