I didnt know where to put this post but I suppose here is as good as any...

Hey, when you guys are designing a website what do you do about different screen resolutions that people have? In the past I've always just designed to my resolution and not thought about t'others! One way is to make the site in all the resolutions I guess, but that would take me too long!

What do you think? :beam:

Last stats I saw was that 50% of the visitors use 800x600. So... I usually go for 750x400 centered in the page. This allows for toolbars, and such...

I find that is about as much as you can squeeze out of a typical visitor...

Cheers Rev, what about sites that arent flash? How would I sort that out?

In order to not have scroll bars across the bottom, try to keep the width at a maximum of 750px., or smaller, as a lot of people surf without maximizing windows (both Ren & I surf this way).

the vert scroll is always going to be there in HTML...

Yeah, I agree with the rev. I try to keep all sites and animations within 765 pixels so people on 800x600 resolutions will still be able to view pages without a problem.

Cheers!

Where did you see the stats regarding monitor resolution? Are you going by what your web log says? I was under the impression that it was ok to design for 1024 x 768 monitors these days. I am looking for a source that confirms this currently. Any one have any ideas where I should look?

Thanks

Did you see that this post is over 2.5 years old?

You should always make your layouts work as small as possible, and be resolution-independant. What about the user on a cell-phone?

What about the user who wants to make your window small so he can see other stuff? Be nice!

What about the user who likes to view webpages one pixel at a time eh? Think about them people ;)

lol. users on cell phones will crash if they go on a flash site. lol. this site locks up ie on my ipaq lol. (those little header flash animation kills). and users on cell phones, would have a different site all together. you would have to make that seperate nokrev.

Not if it wasn't Flash ;)

I was talking about xhtml/css sites.

Well, I guess I didn't see the age of the post, however, I am finding that most ppl are still designing to fit 800 x 600. Doesn't that seem kind of old skool to anyone? Yeah, my wifes G3 iBook is 800 x 600... but it is still running 9.2.2 as well!

This shows 55% are at 1024x768 and 25% are at 800x600...

I wasn't really too concerned about the cellphone surfers for this site.
