Im asking this question myself, i like to share it with you, and see youre comments on this.
Maybe its not a profession because i havent seen (in my country) a Career called, WEBMASTER, or something... maybe it is because some people make that for a living (like me :P), maybe it is only a hobby that gives you some extra cash....
What you think?
Maybe this is a old question? i think it is...

Around here people ask for Webmasters. And you can take a Webmasters course at a vocational (tech) school too.

That's an interesting question, I label myself as a Graphic Designer, but I also work with multimedia and print as well so what does that make me? I would like to know as well... =)

but it has to be something more than a bit of both.
Maybe its hobby that is becoming (or has become) a profession.
or a profesion(or something) that you do for hobby.

redviper, but i think thats what a WEBMASTER is.
a webdesigner (design template)
webdeveloper (makes site).
so why job offers are always looking for WEBMASTERS and not
web designers or developers? they want both in 1?

i have adquired my jobs by applying to WEBMASTERS and GRAPHIC DESIGN post offers,
i label myself has a graphic designer, that know how to make web pages, but still... they are refering to us like WEBMASTERS.

Here.. Maybe this will help you out...
You shouldn't just combine the names to make one.. You should tell them everything for one thing...
Then...
Webmaster is a career if you get paid for it.. But it's more of a hobby if you don't get paid for it.. Easy as that...

Very true play....
WebMaster is my profession. It is what is on my business card. It is also my hobby because I develop side projects for fun (and for money sometimes)

I'll have to go with fester on that one. I have the same setup
where I'm a webmaster by day and a freelancer by night.

I was a Webmaster, now I freelance...
The actual "WebMaster" job has morphed quite a bit since inception. In the mid-90's a WebMaster took care of everything involved with the web...
The web has grown so much, so fast, that it is difficult for one person to be "Master" of the Web.
Most of the jobs for WebMasters are usually underpaid, and overworked...

Wlel.. This is what I am...
On the back of my business card I have put:
Graphic Arts Designer
Web Designer
Web Programmer
Web Updater
A website designer is someone who creates the templates and positions the art on the screen and come sup with the original idea for the site..
A website programmer is someone who sites there and pieces what the webdesigner makes into an actual viewable medium on the web...
Graphic Arts Designer is of course someone who creates graphic arts (logos and headers and buttons and etc..) that accent anything the client needs it to be.
A Web updater is someone who periodically checks up on a site and makes sure everything is fine and okay...
Price Range? Depends on the client... If they wanna pay me by the hour.. This is what I charge..
GAD - $30 / hour
WD -- $25 / hour
WP -- $40-50 / hour
WU -- $10-20 / hour
Typically I get hired to do all 4.. If that's the case.. I usually spend about 4 hours on GAD ($120) 8 on WD ($200) 8-12 WP ($320-$600) and about 2 hours / week on WU ($20-$40)...
So for a decent sized project I'd get around $660 - $960...
WHich by far.. Is cheap compared with others.. But I get at least 2 per month... That's $1320 - $1920 per month or $22 - $32 per hour for 60 hours of work per MONTH.. Only working 60 hours is really nice :) heheh
Someitmes I get extra clients.. And It doesn't take as long or whatever and some of them like to charge by content.. It all depends on the company..
Peace Guys

Rev is right. In my fulltime webmastr job I'm very underpaid. I should be making a lot more but I use the job as my steady income. I make my other money in freelance work. If no other jobs come in at least my fulltime job keeps me from starving.

Nice Answers Guys :D
I also got a webmaster fulltime job, and also, i freelance to get extra, now im trying to run a hosting cpy, but if none of the 2 options works, i still got this webmaster job.
So, some see webmaster has a hobby...
some see webmaster has a profession...
some see webmaster has a hobby that give you $$$
As i see in my country (mexico) and the works i have been on
as webmaster, they are not sure what is the real work of one.
in the job im currently on, yeah i design, update a website...
but also, they need me for doing some photo-scanning thing, and
sometimes they even ask me to do some animations for a
projector they have on the disco, i think webmaster job is
very underpaid here. i earn $600/month for that. you think is ok?.
Cheers, and thanks for the answers!.
its all going clear (maybe not...)

That does seem underpaid to me.
Although I live in the Northeast (Boston area)
The single most expensive place to live in the US.
To rent a single bedroom apartment around here is about $850-950/mo without any utilities.
On the flipside, slalaries are much higher to compensate.
I make $2300 a month with no overtime. and not doing any side projects.

Fester:
you forgot about the one place in the USA that is more expensive than the rest (with the exception of Manhattan)...
San Francisco (a 350 sq ft studio apt goes for $1100/mo) is extremely expensive.
just so you didn't feel picked on in the NE...

I stand corrected. The second most expensive place in the US.
Damn rev that is some serious coin.

because it is so beautiful here, plus it rarely snows, and rarely gets above 90 degrees...
Truly a magical place to live. Expensive, but magical...

It must be nice. I only take home $1400 a month for my webmaster job. Rent is kind of cheap here so that helps. $650 for a tw0 bedroom half basment suite with a in ground pool.

I dunnno diablo.
You might actually make more than us when you factor in demographics and all that fun stuff.
I pay 1.50-1.70 per gallon of gas
$5.00-6.00 for a pack of butts.
If you are getting robbed, you might consider trying to find freelance work in the US and work remotly.
You could eaily pull 30-50/ and hr if you have a strong portfolio and descent communication skills.
I would like to go to Mexico some day. Like cancun where all my alcohol is incuuded in the trip
