I use LW and I must say it is a very very good 3d app. There is not a trial that I know of. But I think they have like a money back thing going. COntact newtek b4 buying. The only thing I can say that needs work is 3rd party support. We dont have a good 3rd party render. But the out of the box renderer is up there with the big boys. I think it is the best bang for the buck.

DDD would be the dude to talk to , hes been using Lightwave and he talks highly of it, from what ive seen , i only used 6 and the little time ive used it, it looks like a pretty good application, the rendering system in it is very powerful (off the shelve) and its particles system (hypervoxels) are pretty amazing.
LOL ::: i was just talkin about you DDD, and you poped up, did you hear me or somthin? :P

yes I will say it is one of the best out of the box renderers around.....really really good stuff......radiosity, caustics......good stuff. Especially for out of the box.

yeah BUT it does take some skills to handle the layer-base hierachy...
Nevertheless the one thing I like about this app is its ergonomy, youve got a HUUUUUGE working space, unlike c4d, max or maya the buttons dont take much space and theres more room to model... just gotta learn your keyboard shortcuts =)

hey, be fair mlk, Maya has a highly intuitive menu system that allows you to customize it heavily. You can work with only a perspective view and NO surrounding crap EXTREMELY easily and with complete functionality through use of the hot box. I was simply blown away after starting to learn 3DSM and then switching over to Maya, its just really darn good. I can't speak for Lightwave since I haven't used it, but unless it makes your monitor grow, Maya can match it with full functionality. But maya turned my world upside down when it comes to GUIs with the hotbox.

There is a book out called inside Lightwave 7 by Dan Alban...
inside you will find a cd with a demo of LW 7..... that is about as close as you are going to get tho' The book is about $60.00... this should put you on the LW path right....

mlk the layers are great. they work pretty much like PS layers...Especially in the surface editor. In defense of max I do find its interface intuitive....Now maya I really do not care for (interface). But it would be a good idea to evaluate all if you can. But LW community is growing and the developers actually listen to the users...which is always good. And support is good and prompt.

actually the one time i got to touch LW (like a 10 min glimpse of it) I really had a hard time understanding the guy who talked about having layers instead of objects, and it was all confusing to me, especially having a separate render & modeling app...
But people do say a lot of good things about this soft and I know it's an industry standard so hail to thee LW !
and AP i shouldnt have mentioned maya (never seen it) i meant houdini, which I have a demo of (and which IS by the way a great app)

well you still have objects, just on separate layers and you can ghost them so you can see your placement. Having layout and modelling split was weird to me at first also, but it is rather cool because you can jump back and forth and work on objects separately then jump back over to layout with a button push...I heard Houdini is sweet never tried it tho.

You don't like the interface DDD? How much time did you spend with it? It's soooo easy to access everything.. it's like within 3 clicks away. I watched a couple tutorial videos and I was **** well on my way to doing stuff in 3D. I'm fairly new to 3D, so maybe the interface is more appealing to me because of that, but it seemed more complex than simplified, but it all just clicks well with me, something that didn't happen with 3DSM.

I always felt the reason for the split app was each prog is so robust, that to have them both in a single app would be interface heavey...
Besides you really need to separate the features... one has nothing to do with the other, In one program you build .... and in the other you film...
I thought that made sence to me..

(starts the chant *Maya, Maya, Maya*) lol.
As you all know big maya fan here. As APDesign said the hotbox and modifing interface are some of the best features of maya, i mean you can make shelfs adding tools and actions that you use more than once which can increase your work flow dramatically (make a shelf for modelling in polys, shelf for nurbs, shelf for particles, shelf for your favourite tools ..ect..) Create windows with Mel that hold actions that you want to use to, say control some joint that controls a body part and you can make a slider that ranges between two values.
Like it has been said many times it comes down to personal taste.
And about maya being all bundled into one app, well i believe that is a good thing , its all about work flow, you dont have to leave the application to do one task or another, i found that intuative.
(chants continue... *Maya, Maya, Maya*) where sen to back me up?? lol :P

Soulman you like maya.... this is good... you are right,... it's what ever your preferences are... like some people prefer to use an html editor like dreamweaver and golive to do webpages.... some people use nothing more than a word pad.... it's all about choices.
All these 3D apps are 2nd level anyway..... but they are fun to work with.... :)
