Question about makng smilies

I was wondering if there was some sort of tutorial on how you guys make your own smilies? I would like to give it a try, but I'm not sure how to go about it.

there is a tutorial on one of the major design sites (robuk maybe) about creating MSN smilies

it's the site that's dark and has the red stuff at the top in a glass tube... i forget what it's called... im so stupid...
