View Full Version : Snow

It's 12:30pm here in England, and I've only just got into work.

It snowed last night, about 1 maybe 2cm. Consequently this morning, the entire public transport system into London has ground to a standstill.

I got to the train station this morning at 8:45, to be told that the 5:45 train still hadn't arrived and wouldn't be doing so for another 3 hours. Okaaaay. They told us to go home, and not use the trains at all.

So we drove in. And the motorways are full because no-one can get a train.

Argh.

The weather forecast last nigth said there would be a little bit of snow. How come the railway companies were still taken by surprise? You'd think they're be prepared for this by now. It's the same every year... :scream:

well we've known for a long time that the rail system in the uk is terrible and especially in place like london where the demand is more than ever...

oh and it snowed here earlier...

Whereabouts are you then?

And I make / design / maintain the whole Churchill site. We're also in charge of Nationwide, Prudential, CSG Claims, NIG... A whole bunch of stuff.

I honestly do a lot of work during the day, but the changes and updates etc don't come in on a regular basis, so I can spend time researching or writing reports. That's when I surf the web. :)

You like the adverts?!? I guess you get more irritated by them the longer you work here. And of course I'm only famous to other British people - Americans have no idea what Churchill the Dog is. Lucky them.

If you want soundbites of the dog, go to http://www.churchill.com/fun and have a look in there. There's video, audio, all sorts of stuff...

The UK transport system is banjoed anyway. Give Connex 2cm of snow and they'll close down for a week. It wasn't as if it was a total shock to them - the news said last night that snow was forecast.

t's the same with autumn. Every year, the leaves falling from the trees catches them unawares...

and then in summer when the heat swells the rails...

and in spring when the rain wets the tracks too much

and then they strike

what a great country we have.

I have not met the dog.

I do not have his autograph.

I'm going to have to be cruel to be kind here. The dog is not real. It's just a small bloke dressed in a dog suit...

I'm sorry if this has shattered your illusions... :)

I'm not sure if he's insured, but I hope to God he's housetrained.

I quite like the snow, as long as I don't have to go out in it for too long. And if I do, then I want a nice warm house or bath to get back home to. :)

Although I'm seriously considering laying a snowball ambush for my other half tonight... Hehe.

Ooooo, very pretty.

I can look out of my 4th floor office window though, and see all the rooftops and trees covered in snow. It's nice too, although probably not on a par with Paris. :)

We just had 2-4 feet of snow dumped on us in two days. We expect it here though and just move on. Snow doesn't shut much down around here. I was gone when it happened and when i got back to my car I could barley see it. A street plow had gon by and compleatly burred the left side of my car. I had to dig for an hour before i could get my car out. I'll send pictures.

So the dog is like the taco bell dog. But this dog is not at all real?

Kitiara
January 8th, 2003, 05:58 AM
Oh boy...

Right, the company I work for is the UK's second biggest general insurer, called Churchill. In a very British act of patriotism, our mascot is a British Bulldog, himself called Churchill the Dog. He appears in our adverts and promotional work, that kind of thing. Soul is right, the dog is actually very famous round in England.

The main site is www.churchill.com which you've probably all seen by now, and that's one of mine. Although we're going to be changing it this year. We've also got www.churchill.com/fun which is what Marketing are calling the 'funsite'. It's more about the dog, basically.

We also do websites for NIG, CSG, Prudential, Nationwide bank and a few others, all of whom we own.

We don't get snow where I'm from but it did rain today... which is weird, since getting "real weather" of any kind is unheard of in Southern California. I want my money back.

It hasn't snowed today, and it's beginning to melt. So now we're getting flood warnings.

Go figure.

sintax321
January 9th, 2003, 09:51 AM
FLOOD WARNINGS. That is really sad. 2-4 cm of snow shouldn't cause this much trouble. I guess we are just more use to it.

ahmed
January 9th, 2003, 10:12 AM
flood warning cause the snow is melting?? two-cenimeteres thick ? man... we've had like 10 inches this week... it is melting.. but we never had a flood warning or anything close to that:!::P

andr.in
January 9th, 2003, 11:32 AM
Usually in February we have about a metre or so...! If that starts to melt we're all just happy cuz the weater is starting to get warmer not warned for floods! lol :P

sintax321
January 9th, 2003, 12:59 PM
Ya we have 4-5 foot banks of snow in some places. Never heard of a flood warning from it. Heard of a basment flooding once though from melting snow.
