have you got a font program, something that handles your fonts on your laptop? Adobe type manager? suitcase?

that is definitely strange, and i've never heard of such a thing.
Have you tried resinstalling the fonts?
Also, you are saying that you're making a new text box, and not
opening an older one, right?

Well you probably dont need a font manager, but you can check it out at adobe site Adobe Type Manager (http://www.adobe.com/products/main.html) it basically a app that holds all your fonts and you can manage them in particular folders.
Im guessing you using photoshop 5.5 or lower where you need to go to a text box area to type.(am i right?). seems like something has stuffed up your fonts. Like Unflux suggested reinstall your fonts, might be a quick fix situation, if pain persist get a hammer.... lol....jk.....
Put down the hammer...! :run:
