View Full Version : Wouldn't mind a gaming battle.....

Marz
December 24th, 2002, 05:04 AM
I wouldn't mind being ina total gaming battle..

If I were to list some basic guildelines I'd have to say..

1. Month of January Time Period (wait til after x-mas and everything) and games take up a lot of time to make...

2. Flash only.. No outside programs can be used.. So test your flash drawing skills in this...

3. Certain size limitations as well...

That's about all though.. The genre or type of game and other info could be decided by the "kirupa" gods.. *lol*

Peace Out

Theme: Create a Flash Game
Programs: Flash Only
Size: Under 1MB
Competitors: playamarz, alethos, ilyaslamasse, kitiara (maybe)
Date: February 1st (2-1-03)

That sound ok, I would have set a less broad theme, but making a game in Flash is hard enough. Unless you want me to pin-point a specific type of game?

ahmed
January 1st, 2003, 11:37 PM

It wouldn't be a fair battle considering the more time you had to make your entry than the other competitors. I wish I could let you, but it would cause too much of a mess if you won from members complaining. We never said you couldn't keep the basis of your game and just update it for the battle. By update, I mean some major updatage! =)

Would it be possible to narrow the theme down a bit? It would give some direction and a place to start.

Give me some ideas, what kind of games are possible in Flash that aren't too advanced for a battle?

Kitiara
January 2nd, 2003, 11:58 AM
How about card games? Snap, memory, poker, blackjack...

alethos
January 2nd, 2003, 01:22 PM
Well actually I was thinking of just a broad game genre being assigned. Like "first-person shooter", or "turn-based strategy". That way we could design a brand new game as opposed to making our own blackjack game for example.

On the other hand, I do like Kit's idea. It'd be interesting to see how everyone would make a game common to all (like blackjack). It would probably be easier to judge when it comes to voting.

So whichever direction you choose is fine with me. :ub: I just wanted a theme a little more specific than just "any game".

:asian: :sigh: :asian:

I'd have to say... These types of games to choose from...

Board (chess, checkers)
Card (poker, blackjack)
Action / Adventure (king's quest, mega man)
Platform (mario world, crash bandicoot)
First Person Shooter (Doom, Wolfenstein)
Role Playing Game (Final Fantasy, Diablo)
Turned Based Game (Warcraft, STarcraft, COmmand n Conquer)

Allright.. Here are some ideas for you... See ya later guys..

GOOD LUCK

How about the choice of a board or card game, but then again are these games going to be multiplayer, I take it board games will be a little controvertial in single player.....

alethos
January 2nd, 2003, 02:18 PM
Hmmm...well I will need a lot more time to completely figure out the use of socket servers if this has to be multiplayer (something I don't relish doing :)). Perhaps I shoulda kept my big mouth shut from the beginning and just let everyone do their own thing:sigh:.

telekinesis
January 2nd, 2003, 02:49 PM
That is exactly why I am thinking a board game theme would not be good. I am not a big gamer, I don't know what is fun, easy, and less time tasking!

Marz
January 2nd, 2003, 06:14 PM
Well... As for board games... Those could be done with php if in multiplayer.. BUT...

No multiplayer options please... That's a league of it's own.. And I don't think anyone here wnats to worry with that.. Huh guys?

So...

How about this.. You gte your choice between the following catagories....

:bad::nerd::bad:

Card Games : I hate card games but others love it, make an ORIGINAL card game or update an old card game into a cooler idea

:asian:

Role Playing Game : Make a Zelda type game.. You don't have to make it incredibly long.. Just make a cool little game for people to play to show your talents in making a game.

:beam:

Fighting Game : Create a small fighting game with 4-6 characters to fight wit.. Can be 2d or 3d if you really want to.. Give em special moves and make the computer ai decent.. Doesn't have to be great.. Just decent...

(-:

Side Scrolling Fighter Pilot Game : Should be found./. kind-a like Galaga.. Just fly and shoot.. Get powerups or do whatever...

If you guys can think of any others.. Please do so.. if you like the outlined list right here.. I say we get cracking then.. Eh?

Peace Out

I just wanted to get something cleared up:

We can ONLY use Flash, right? So that means no imported graphics (and so no imported graphics that have the "trace Bitmap" command applied)? No sounds either? No server-side scripting?

I would like it if we could use sounds at least. It would add another dimension. What's the ruling on all this? If we can use some of the above, then I'd like to know soon so I know what all my options are. So far I've been working under the assumption that it was Flash only, but I have a feeling other people might be incorporating other stuff (stuff that I'd like to add too! :)).

-Al

Marz
January 6th, 2003, 01:16 PM
Okay...

Sounds.. You can use sounds thta you made using sound recorder... Yeha.. I just thought of that too.. Good Job.. But as for importing graphics.. No...

I want this to be more of a "programming" aspect... Because I know I'm not the greatest graphic artist out here... Know what I mean?

So.. Flash with Sounds.. There ya go.. Anytype of sounds actually.. it'll make the games more ambient...

Peace

alethos
January 6th, 2003, 01:40 PM
Ok, so sounds are in. Good. :)

I personally haven't decided what kind of game I'm making, but I'm working on some sprites and such to see what turns up. :)

Would anybody like to share what kind of game they are making (I know marz is making a side-scroller R-Type kinda game)?

are the contestants already set in stone?

Makaveli
January 10th, 2003, 07:37 PM
not yet sen, the stoning process works best during peak daylight hours, if we want them to be stoned properly, we need maximum sun. if we placed them in cement or something at night they would not be frozen enough and the process will be a waste, So to answer your question NO the contestests have NOt be set in stone yet. :P :P

alethos
January 10th, 2003, 07:43 PM
Ok to clear things up:

The only graphics allowed are those created in Flash, with Flash (so no imported graphics). As for sounds, you don't have to use just your own recorded sounds. You can use any sounds/music you want. Lastly, this has to be a new project by you. In other words you can't update or rehash or build upon something you've created before.

And to answer your question, Sen: I have nothing against more contestants joining. As long as the others agree (or the mod agrees), then you can join. :)

(life of brian quotes come to mind) :P :P Best movie ever.

And Al, I've used bitmaps. I guess I'll have to supress them, but I really don't understand what you have against imported images :(

alethos
January 12th, 2003, 03:28 PM
You misunderstood me, pom. I have nothing against bitmaps, but when marz set all this up, he pointed out that this battle would be purely in Flash, with no imported bitmaps. I posted a question about this and he confirmed that no bitmaps are allowed. If you want to use bitmaps, I have no problem with it, but because marz didn't want them, I put aside a game idea I had (that would absolutely require bitmaps) and I'm currently still trying to figure out what kind of game to make. :)

So if the others are ok with it I, too would like to use bitmaps. I would leave it up to marz since he started this battle. If he doesn't mind the bitmaps, I would be very happy. :trout:

nah, I made a game for kellogs last year at 60k including sounds. A meg is PLENTY if not more than enough. If you use more than a meg, then you need to learn how to consolidate a little more... and having a pressing limitation (should that be pressing) will do just that for you - make you find a way to make it work given those criteria.

Besides, this is flash based, and we are making swfs... considering swf stands for "small web file" I think they should embody that. If I am actaully able to find time to implement my idea (something someone mentioned earlier), I doubt my swf would be much more than (IF more than) 10k... of course thats without sounds; I doubt Ill add any.

I think it adds to 'battle' too. Limitations set a level for everyone to adhere to - theoretically giving the underdogs (those who wont go to the effort of doing so much to have to worry about it) a fighting chance. I started a 50 lines or less contest in were-here a year or two ago (F5) and that was a lot of fun. It pretty much gave everyone a chance because how much can you really do in 50 lines? Some great stuff came out of it though. It was called the "voxel" contest though it delt with pixels (a lot of people did 3d though so it became voxel in nature). I did about 8 for it, this (http://userpages.umbc.edu/~tmccau1/flash/werehere/contestlinks.php3?movie=snow) being my favorite, but there was close to 100 total responces and it was really interesting what people could do given such a limitation. Id give more examples but most of them (hosted by those who made them) are no longer available...

not that it matters anyway because Im totally blowing this out of proportion :) but it is just....

IMHO

and again, its not that it effects me so I have nothing to lose ;)

pom

Very nice stuff. A few month ago, bit did the same on his site, except it was 25 lines and we had to use the drawing API. Some very nice things came out of it

THATS what swf stands for....i thought it was shockwave file or something *kicks turtle sitting next to me* anyways, looks like from what you guys say, there is a lot of experience at making games....we can dub them the Kirupaville Olympics!! lol :P actually that would be a funny name for this section of the forum lol ;) none of you is doping i hope....we wil have mandatory testing every 15 hours :P :P :P

senocular
January 15th, 2003, 02:09 PM
yeah its a common misconception. shockwave files are .drc :) ... though from what I understand swf did at one time stand for "shockwave file" but it was re-acronymized to prevent confusion. Whether or not thats true, Im not sure, but if you asked anyone from MM the meaning, theyd shoot for the small web file thing.

very impressive! Not only coding skills, but the concept is awesome :A+:

I´m still stunned, so, i´m sure this is a dumb question but i´m gonna make it anyway. I think that this attached game.txt need to be renamed to game.as, in order to get the game working (kirupagame.fla). but, after rename it, the out put window returns a bunch of errors, and the game doesn´t work.

what did i do wrong?

senocular
February 5th, 2003, 01:06 AM
yeah Guig0, you'll have to name it to .as, but that should be it... I just re-downloaded the fla and the text, renamed it and tested it and it works for me so :-\ I dont know whats wrong. Here they are together in a zip. Hope it works for you this time...

BTW I never explained how to play. lol. move the mouse to aim, press and hold the left mouse button to power up and shoot. After reaching max power your gun will automatically fire so no holding in ;) Arrow keys move. There is no ground and there is no upper or horizontal limits. Enemy creation is random and each is worth 1 point. First person to nine hundred and twenty-three quintillion, eight hundred and seventy-four quadrillion, thirty-four trillion, nine hundred, eighty-seven billion, five hundred and two million, three hundred and ninety-eight thousand, seven hundred and fifty-seven points wins :)
