lol no Kit, l33t means you're elite, number one, the best, and the greatest. n00b means I'm a newbie, a beginner, I'm what you might call a kiddiwink. :P

Edwin just left for a 5 week vacation and he is the only one I know of that has any line art. Everyone knows I can't do anything that has to do with lines or art so I won't be subjected to getting owned up in another battle. Maybe if I had a WACOM I would try. I'll ask around on other forums that I post at if they want to battle in line art!

ill do a sketched art battle?
i dont have a wacom.. so my pencil and paper comes into use =P

lostinbeta
December 24th, 2002, 12:25 AM
Well kit doesn't use a Wacom for her line art either, so it is fair.

Jubba
December 24th, 2002, 03:08 AM
I would, but I don't get my other computer back until at least Friday. I can start drawing something now, then I could scan in it and start the work on it... I am willing but I would need an extended time period in order to get anything done. :) If the due date was not until the 3rd or 4th then I am all up for it. :)

What theme would you like to do? I was thinking of some type of fantasy...dragons and wizards and such, but anything would do. Just something to keep my imagination in check... :)

Kitiara
December 24th, 2002, 05:40 AM
Cool... As Lost said, I don't have a Wacom (I wish more like) - all I tend to do is draw a sketch by hand then scan it in and trace over it in Flash to add colour and shading etc.

Jubba - Fantasy / dragon type things sound fantastic, real potential there.

Can we have another mod (since I'm entering this one I won't set the rules) to set the guidelines along what's been suggested so far?

Marz
December 24th, 2002, 12:56 PM
What do you mean by line art?

No fills or colors added? Just lines?

Please show me an example and I might participate.. This seems very interesting..

Peace Out

Jubba
December 24th, 2002, 01:00 PM
Line art is pretty much a vector drawing. Here is an example (check out Kit's attachment):

Here is a tutorial that Kit made:

I'll do it!

Thanks for the examples dan... I've got a couple of good drawing ideas to throw in this mix and I understand how to do it fairly well...

So.. Chalk me up pardners... I'm reayd to go for this one..

When we starting..
And How long we got?

Peace Out.. btw.. Fantasy/dragons rock!

Line Art Battle everyone!!

Theme: Fantasy -- Phil the Dragon, the terrible White Knight Slayer
Programs: A pen, a piece of paper, A scanner, Flash (did I forget anything?)
Size: let's make it big, shall we? Somewhere around 800*600
Participants: Kit, Jubby, Playamarz, Ribcage, Majeye (?)
Due Date: 01-05-03 (tell me if it's too short, Jubby)

This was my first time, people, so please be indulgent...

Marz
December 26th, 2002, 06:31 PM
If I'm correct...

The only things you are allowed to use are:

pen/pencil
paper
scanner
flash

You draw the lines with pen/pencil and then color with flash..

I beluieve that is the concept..

Correct?

Peace

lostinbeta
December 26th, 2002, 06:32 PM
Yeah, I am going to say no Wacom use here, since it will be unfair competition that way.

You don't have to use all of the medium, I know kit does a lot of her work from scratch in Flash, no scanning or anything.

So that is optional.

Beginning to wish I'd never mentioned this contest... I think I'd better get to work on my entry. :)

Jubba
December 28th, 2002, 07:36 PM
Well the whole point of the battle is to DRAW some fantasy type picture and then make it line art in Flash. If you found the dragon on the web then its not really a measure of your artistic ability and more of a measure of your tracing ability. I don't care if you enter it, just I personally wouldn't submit it if it wasn't my image.

I apologize if I sounded rude or offended. I just don't feel that having an entry that was not drawn by the "enterer" is not fair to the others that are going to draw their entry and put in the time. Your idea was very good, and it looked very good. I still think you should try to come up with something original. Even if you drew that same dragon over yourself and did the same thing.

There is a dragon in it, actually 3 or 4 dragons... and a 'knight' as well...but its a bit unorthodox... well, we'll have to see...I won't be posting until the deadline because I won't be able to actually get to work on it with the computer until then...

It's certainly my preferred medium. I tried drawing some line art in Photoshop, but just couldn't get it to do what I wanted. Flash doesn't have the range of special effects and tools that Photoshop does, but for my particular style of art, that's a good thing.

ribcage
January 2nd, 2003, 10:03 AM
..your work Kit is , you dont keep the stroke in your art. you rely on the tones to give your stuff volume. I am such a pencil to paper guy I can't let go of the outlines ( my own little security blanket ). afraid to leave the sketch behind I guess.
Thx for putting the tute together, never used flash like that before.

..Design & drawing in regards to the definition of line art.
I was not aware of the gradient fill being a nono. I figured that the
limitation of the battle was solely Flash ( gradients and alpha levels included)
with that said I don't mind forfeiting my art , wish you would have posted that last week. had fun with the dragon stuff though, so no big loss.

Kitiara
January 2nd, 2003, 10:13 AM
Thanks for the compliment. :)

I did try leaving the outlines in when I first started, but they just seemed to dominate the picture... I submitted one to deviantART. This is the link to it : deviantART Submission (http://www.deviantart.com/view/836796).

I wasn't too keen on it with the lines in, but maybe that's just me. If I thinned them down to .25 stroke then it looked better. But occasionally I need them, as I always draw on a white background, and sometimes the picture blends in. I suck at backgrounds, you see. :)

ribcage
January 2nd, 2003, 10:21 AM
I see what you mean about the line dominating, I tried thinning the lines on my dragon and changing stroke colors to more closely match the ares they defined .
Cheers

Kitiara
January 2nd, 2003, 10:24 AM
Yeah, that works. I found that a lightish grey was quite good as a stroke colour. It separated everything, but wasn't too extreme.

I prefer just to get rid of the lot though. It makes it easier for me to tell if I've defined everything well enough. If I can't see where limbs etc start and end then I need to work on the picture and shading more.

I'm sorry. I really hate to do this, but I am going to have to bow out. My computer is seriously fudged up. We were attempting to put in a 1.8 gHz on my motherboard. Apparently my motherboard didn't like that, so it fried out, and it took the processor and the power supply with it. Now I have to wait for more parts to come in. I won't have my computer back until at least next thursday (at that is if I'm lucky).

Sucks too because I had my images all drawn up. I was finally happy with them after re-drawing them 50 times. :( Good luck to all the rest of you :)

Don't be silly - that's just my definition of 'pure' line art. This battle is about what you can do with it in Flash, so your entry is perfectly acceptable. Besides, if you look at my entry then you'll see I've used a gradient fill myself in there, so I'd have to drop out too. Your entry is more than welcome. :)

Unrelated question-
if I had an Fla that is say version 4 or 5 which forum should i submit sample for discussion. The fla is a photo gallery that has a timer so the images fade in and out until a button triggers a specific image ( say image 4 of 10 ) and if a short interval passed with no more triggering then the fades would begin again, possibly random.

Was that lightsaber done in Swift 3d? I have not used any 3d programs that render vectors, but now i am intrigued. :smirk: So, is it Swift? huh, huh, is it? c'mon tell me...

i suspect that you are too late. If you want to join a battle, find a new one via the battles section, and make sure that it is one that hasn't started. Or, create a thread in the same section, and challenge people to a battle..

This way, you can suggest the theme, and rules, and whatnot. Good Luck :)
