View Full Version : Flash/Design Contest

Ok here's our contest. Hopefully we get a lot of good entries. We have just created a new layout for our company website (WWW.AFTEREFX.COM) and would like to add some flash animation to it as well as a flash intro page. We don't want it to be extremely big in size. Also, we would like the flash intro page to have an option to skip the intro and go straight to the website, as well as a status bar when it's loading.
Here's the links to the new layout (in both .jpg and .psd) as well as our logo:
http://www.afterefx.com/downloads/afterefx_v5.jpg
http://www.afterefx.com/downloads/afterefx_v5.psd
http://www.afterefx.com/downloads/afterefx_v5_logo.psd
Use your imagination, and make it however you like. Here's what I was thinking... If you want to use it go ahead. If not, that's fine also...
Flash Intro Page = Have our logo and feel free to use the following phrases somehow:
"Do you own your own business?"
"What if you could have your business accessible to thousands of potential customers?"
"Why settle for less when you can get the best?"
"With customer satisfaction as our number one goal, we guarantee quality."
"At AfterEfx, Inc. we strive for excellence."
"No other web design firm will give you the quality that we offer at such a low price."
Main Page = Have the banner animated some how. not sure quite how. Some how make the menu boxes animated. Maybe have them rolldown on mouse rollover or something, as well as the links in the Navigation menu.
This contest will be for either $130.00 or 1 year of hosting, which ever you would like. We are also always looking for independent contractors, so this would be a great way of showing us what you can do. Here are the details as far as the hosting:
2000MB Monthly Transfer
50MB Hard Disk Storage
10 POP3 Email Accounts
Free .com, .net, .org, .info, or .biz domain name
Microsoft FrontPage 2002 extensions fully supported
Microsoft Active Server Page (ASP)
Unlimited aliases and automatic email responders
Unlimited email forwarding to any specified email address
High performance dual-processor Windows 2000 servers
Ultra-fast redundant multi-DS3 Internet connection (multiple T3)
Linux available by request
If you are interested, please email me at thernandez@afterefx.com with any questions. Thanks in advance.

ok i think this part of the forum is supposed to be for "fun" and not an ad for your business =)

If that's so, then I apologize. I thought it was for contests (BATTLES)? But I didn't see anything that said you couldn't offer a prize to the winner.

Did you want just the buttons on the left and on the top redone, or the whole inner interface?
dyms
December 4th, 2002, 12:34 AM
well it's really up to you. I don't think the entire layout has to be redone, but if you think it would look better a different way, then that would be up to your judgement. Thanks.

Hey guys, his request is definitly acceptable, sorry for the weak welcome dyms! Sounds like a good idea, I am a moderator so I think this would be a battle I'm not able to participate in because if I win users would think it's unfair for one of the more experienced members to join this. But I'm not sure, if it sounds cool with others then maybe I will see what I can do.
Any more people interested?

I am interested. I like the Navigation buttons on the left side, I think you should leave them. I would do navigation buttons on the top...onRollovers and the like...

morse: Knock yourself out. Any modifications you want to do, will be welcomed.
dan4885: Thanks for the warm welcome. I for one would like as many people to join in as possible (of course. haha). I don't think experience should be a limiting factor in the contest. What do you guys think?

I agree with Dan that mods shouldn't join, but I still think that the mods should submit seperatly if they would like to participate. I know many people here could make an excellent intro, including the mods.
Dan, you want to set a due date, or is this going to be a little different than the usual...?
morse

One last thing...For now:
dyms:
Do you want a specefic font (if so, what) or anything that looks good?
dyms
December 4th, 2002, 01:46 AM
Oh sorry about that. Actually the due date will be Jan 01, 2003.
How about this. There will be 2 seperate contests. One for the mods and then one for everyone else. The prize will only go to the winner of the regular contest. So if we choose the design that a mod creates, then the prize would go to whomever had the best design out of the regular users. But on our website, we will use the design which we like the best, no matter who made it. Let me know if there's any objections to that idea.

Well I don't have the time to make something like this for just free, but good luck to the regular members. I will let dyms set a due date and the battle rules. It's for his site so I would have no clue what to do for a theme, colors, etc.
dyms
December 4th, 2002, 06:24 PM
Well, that's the beauty of it. Everything is pretty much up to you guys as far as colors, etc. I wish we could use two designs somehow, and then we would have 2 seperate prizes. But I think for now we'll just go with the 1 prize/1 contest/1 winner. Maybe that'll be our next contest...

December 4th, 2002, 10:59 PM
haha It sounds like you really want to join in. I think I'm going to go back on what I said earlier. Since I came up with the contest, I ought to be able to set the rules, right?
** This contest will be open to EVERYONE. Mod or no mod.
I don't think I should restrict someone for joining just because they have more experience. Morse, just because they have more experience doesn't mean you can't do better. People's tastes are different. This is going to be judged by myself and 3 others in my company. So what I'm trying to say is don't get intimidated!
Here's what I'll do... Just to make it interesting, I'll give a $50 prize to the runner up! So to sum it up...
NEW RULES:
1-Any experience level is welcome to join in.
2-$50 goes to the runner-up

yea, the one year free hosting sounds tempting....alas i suck at flash & PS, so i won't embarass myself by joining :(
excuse my curiosity dym, if your company is a web design compnay...why are you "outsourcing" to a forum to get an intro for a company that is supposed to be creating intro's/web design for others? forgive me if this sounds stupid i'm a n000b
dyms
December 5th, 2002, 08:58 PM
No problem. Actually the reason we aren't creating it ourselves is because we've been extremely busy lately. We keep meaning to redo our company website, but something else always comes up. Therefore, we decided to have someone else create it for us.
As far as parabol and electrongeek, I'm not sure they read the new rules. There is a grand prize and a prize for the runner-up. It doesn't matter what your skill level is.

!!! UPDATE !!!
We have a NEW logo!
If you are joining in on our contest, we have a new logo for you to incorporate into the design. If you have already created your design with the old logo that I previously posted, that is fine. I will not dock anybody's work for using the old logo. But if you haven't started yet, I would appreciate if you can use the NEW logo. You can download it here:

So you want a Intro, Buttons, and Banner all done in flash. So basicly just build a whole site in flash? If we are the winner is there any promise of future contract work? After the first free year how much does the hosting cost?

Hi,
I'm sorry if this sounds rude but I make a living doing the kind of stuff dyms is asking for and I think he's being very cheeky. That costs a lot (A LOT) of money in the real world.
This won't benefit either the winner or the pros that have it hard enough to find projects.
I'm sorry if I'm causing trouble but I thought I had to say it (we all like freebies, but at what or who's expense?)
Cheers

Okay, well first of all, this contest is open for anybody who wants to join. If we wanted to pay a professional web development company to create an extravegant website, then we would have done that, or created one ourselves. We are looking for talented up-and-coming designers who would like a chance to shine. Unfortunately, I can not guarantee that I will offer our position to the winner, but we are looking to hire a developer for contract work, and I think this would be the best way to see what you can do.
Here are the requirements:
- Flash intro page. Must have our logo incorporated into it in someway. The logo CAN be slightly modified.
- Main page, animated top banner/header. This should be done in Flash.
That is all that is required. The animated navigation menu is not necessary, although it might help the overall feel of the main page. And once again, if you normally charge an arm and a leg for your website designs, and don't see the benefits of joining the contest - by all means, don't join. This isn't for everybody. But for those of you who wouldn't mind making some money, or getting a year of hosting, we look forward to seeing your work.
PS-To see the rates of what the hosting fees will be after the year is over, you can find them here:

morse,
Looks good. But actually I think there may have been a misunderstanding. I do not want the CURRENT website redone. We have created a layout, found here:
http://www.afterefx.com/downloads/afterefx_v5.jpg
And that is the actual layout that needs to be fixed-up. Add some flash to it, etc. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
