Hey Everyone!
I'm a noob to this forum but this sounds interesting :D i want to challenge anyone in 3d and photoshop! Perhaps like an object (like the desk) or maybe wallpaper? I dont really mind :) Is anybody interersted? I dont mind if this is individual or like a team challenge...

Count me in. My skillz are terrible, but there's only one way to improve: practice.

A chance to go up against Dan? Oh man, I'm in! :P
kei
December 4th, 2002, 05:13 AM
hehehe awsome :D
i was thinking of product packages?
like you have to model some sort of product in 3d.. it can be anything simple such as a can, bottle or box of some sort.. and u need to create some original packaging in photoshop or paintshop or watever :)?
what do u guys think?
eyeinfinitude
December 4th, 2002, 12:33 PM
Sounds good to me, lets see what everyone thinks.
alethos
December 4th, 2002, 12:47 PM
That sounds like a good idea. My only concern is that people will just plop down a cube, squish it a bit, call it a box, and put all the rest of their time on the texture. How about something that poses a challenge on the modelling, and texturing side?

I was thinking more of something abstract than a box.....you guys can do that, but I think I will drop out of this battle if so.
eyeinfinitude
December 4th, 2002, 06:02 PM
abstract? like a abstract wallpaper? and why are you gonna drop dan!?!?!? :( The more the merrier! =) Well whatever you decide then thats cool, what do you guys think about the abstract thing? Dan could you be more specific?
alethos
December 4th, 2002, 06:48 PM
I personally would prefer not to do a box. Abstract is not really my thing, but I'll give it a shot. Maybe Lost should set a theme and everything. Or perhaps Kei, the originator of this thread, should have the last word?

December 4th, 2002, 06:51 PM
i really dont mind! i've never done abstract before but this could be a good opportunity to do one... i guess its up to everyone.. anything will do for me :)
if we do the packaging one it doesnt really matter what you concentrate on.. you may do some really cool modelling but not so good texture or vise versa.. it would be the end piece that would be judged.. :)
eyeinfinitude
December 4th, 2002, 06:51 PM
thats fine, we'll just wait for the rest to come up with something.
kei
December 4th, 2002, 06:56 PM
how long are the challenges meant to go for? :p
eyeinfinitude
December 4th, 2002, 06:59 PM
doesnt matter to me ethier, but lets wait for a mod to decide and set up the specs.

This is something 'abstact 3D' that I did for a battle in another forum:
http://www.macromotive.com/ebay/dalu/aliska_battle.jpg
I can't exactly explain abstract in words, just art.....so what do you think? Abstract or the box thing?
eyeinfinitude
December 4th, 2002, 07:31 PM
the box thing sounds boring, abstract sounds fun, but either way is fine, what do you say guys?
kei
December 4th, 2002, 07:35 PM
it doesnt have to be a box.. you could model otehr things like a glass bottle or something if you wanted to..
but abstract is fine with me :)
eyeinfinitude
December 4th, 2002, 07:48 PM
Dan, would you decide for us and get this thing on the road. =)

Them's some sweet werx, Geek and Kei! I'm an advanced skiier, but my $700 (that's in CDN$ so it's like US$4.87) boots got stolen/lost. I've been boarding only 3 times, but it was hellafun so I've decided to take it up. Gonna go out and get the gear tomorrow, actually. Just a beginner's board for now and we'll see how it goes!
Here's my entry:

Kei- Is that squarish ball thing created in 3dsmax? It's frickin' cool!
-brad-
kei
December 18th, 2002, 07:09 AM
thanks for ur feedback guys!
bcogswell11 - yep.. just about everything on that was created in 3D max other than that snowboard guy and the texts..
I had this different idea at the start.. was going to make this futuristic city but I didnt have enough time..so ended up changing it to a snowboarding scene! the thing at the top left corner is meant to be the city.. It's basically buildings (modelled using primative objects) placed on a sphere.. :p
since i changed my idea half way thats why the wallpaper looks a bit weird! hehe

December 18th, 2002, 07:11 AM
Hey alethos did u make that tree kinda thing in ur entry?? that looks soo mad!! what programs did u use?
alethos
December 18th, 2002, 07:18 AM
I used Maya 4. It has fractal scripts and such. I basically had to model pathways and apply what are called "tubes" to it. Maya uses fractal math and your colour/shape/size/etc settings to build the tube thingies. I love your city ball. Did you use the greebles plugin or was it all done manually?
eyeinfinitude
December 18th, 2002, 08:07 AM
Thanks for the comments guys, this is going to be a tough battle as I expected. To Kei and alethos, both your work is really good, it's nice to see a variety. =)
kei
December 18th, 2002, 08:43 AM
ahh Maya :)
nah i did it manually.. wats greebles plugin do?
alethos
December 18th, 2002, 08:44 AM
Thanks Electriongeek. I like your new footer; it's a lot cleaner than the old one.
Dan's the last one to submit, right? I must say I am surprised at the variety in the submissions. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but I'm happy I was wrong. Great work you two!

Thanks alethos, I got bored of the old footer so I made this one.
I've never used Maya before, but I wish I could though. =)

You know old scifi shows with spaceships -- oh! Star Wars had a lot of this. You know how the Death Star has a bunch of surface details that are just like pipes and cubes and stuff sticking out of it? The Star Destroyers had it too. Well those details were dubbed "greebles" and someone made a plugin for MAX that put greebles onto a surface geometry. Your city looked a lot like it, but used in a better way.
Hey, Geek, is Cinema 4D a lot like Truespace (I think that's what it's called...can't remember)? If it is, then wowie wowowow! Truespace was a witch (with a capital "B") to model with beyond sticking primitives together.
Great work once again to both of you. :A+: :A+:

Speaking of footers, does anyone know when the footer contest is gonna start?
I've started my footer, but I'm trying to hash out a good portable OO system to use with Flash before I get to coding for real. I'm gonna try to make my footer run solely on code (nothing in the library). Wish me luck!
-Al
eyeinfinitude
December 18th, 2002, 08:55 AM
Actually they're kinda similar, but I think Truespace is better. Cinema 4D is good, but its not as powerful. Right now I'm starting to work with Softimage which I heard was used to make the Jurassic Park movies.
alethos
December 18th, 2002, 09:06 AM
Oh Softimage is a beauty from what I hear. It was used to make Star Wars EpII and Minority Report. Of course, as we all know, it's not the software that makes or breaks the final image, it's the artist. You've got no worries there, Geek.
This was my first abstract piece ever. I'd be interested in a tutorial (or even a basic rundown) of how you make your images, Geek.

You're in luck, I've been working on a tutorial for Kirupa on how to make simple crystals using a texter made from photoshop. I've been so busy with work that I've only got 30% of it done, but I'll try to finish it soon. =)

Sorry for the delay. I thought I had time to work on it earlier this week, but of course that plan never worked out. I got to work like an hour ago and made a crappy battle entry because I at least want to have something to enter even if I am wasting my time, I gotta be a good sport, know what I mean? Well here it is, about 60-80 minutes worth of work in 3ds max and photoshop. Wish I could have been less time strapped and made something better. I am starting work at a design firm in January and I get a triple screen monitor set up, a dream PC, OC-192 connection, and all the programs my nueron can handle:
http://www.macromotive.com/ebay/dalu/venom.jpg
I will set up a poll, it's going to be sad to see my vote-less entry lol :P

It is ok for the time I put into it, but I wish I wasn't so busy and could have made a more decent entry, but whatever. I set up a poll, vote here:
